September is National Library Card Sign Up Month!
By Rachel R, HCPL
September marks National Library Card Sign Up Month! This initiative was started by the American Library Association in 1987 to get children signed up for a library card at the beginning of the school year. Providing children with a library card helps them to grow their literacy skills and allows them free access to learning throughout their lives.
HCPL offers multiple types of library cards for patrons to meet their specific needs! HCPL currently offers these cards to the public free of charge:
The Knowledge Card is available to all adults residing in Texas and provides access to all of HCPL’s physical and digital resources. This card can also be used with the Montgomery County Memorial Library System, the Bellaire City Library, and the Pasadena Public Library. Patrons must provide proof of residence and submit their application at any of HCPL’s 27 branches to obtain this card.
The iKnow Digital Access Card is a digital card that can be used for HCPL’s digital resources only. Patrons can obtain this card by submitting an application on HCPL.net. This card is limited to Harris County residents only.
The Enhanced+ Card is a library card with all of the same perks as the Knowledge Card that also doubles as a valid photo ID. Patrons must provide proof of residence and identity and submit their application in person at the library. This card is available to all Texas residents.
The TexShare Card is sponsored by the Texas State Library & Archives Commission and provides access to materials from participating libraries throughout the state. Patrons who have had their HCPL cards for at least 90 days and are in good standing may apply for this card in person at the library.
The Military Library Card is similar to the iKnow Digital Card but is specifically designed for active-duty military members without a Texas mailing address. Patrons can obtain this card by submitting an application on HCPL.net.
The SPARK Card is a unique library card specifically for Tomball ISD students. This card provides full access to all of HCPL’s digital resources and allows students to place limited holds during the academic year that will be delivered to their school. Students can submit an application for this card through their school.
