The Harris County Master Gardeners Southeast Fall Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026, featuring native plants, fruit trees and fall vegetables. One week later, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, the garden will host a tree giveaway by Trees For Houston.

For homeowners looking for native plants for Houston-area landscapes, fruit trees suited for the region or vegetables for a fall garden, the October events offer an opportunity to connect gardening plans with local horticultural resources.

October 10: Native Plants, Fruit Trees and Fall Vegetables

The October 10 sale is especially timely for gardeners thinking beyond spring planting. Shoppers can expect a selection centered on native plants, fruit trees and fall vegetables, giving residents several ways to add useful and seasonally appropriate plants to their yards and gardens.

For Cypress Mill homeowners, the event may also be helpful for a reason that goes beyond the plants themselves: Harris County Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who work with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to share research-based horticultural information with the public.

That means shoppers can have conversations about where a plant may perform best, how to care for it and how to address common landscape challenges.

As previous plant sale visitors have put it: “Master Gardeners have a solid reputation for offering great plants at reasonable prices.”

And for gardeners who have ever stood in a nursery wondering whether a beautiful plant will actually work in their yard, access to experienced volunteers can be particularly useful.

October 17: Trees For Houston Tree Giveaway

The following Saturday, October 17, Genoa Friendship Gardens will host a tree giveaway by Trees For Houston, creating another opportunity for area residents to add to their landscapes.

Why Harris County Master Gardener Plant Sales Matter

The Harris County Master Gardener Association is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and its Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who help Extension provide research-based horticultural education throughout the county. The organization says it holds multiple plant sales each year to raise money supporting that educational mission.

Plant sale proceeds help support programs including Cylinder Gardening for children, Junior Master Gardener activities, demonstration gardens, educational workshops and other community horticulture programs.

“When you buy plants, there are Master Gardeners on-hand to tell you where your plant will thrive, how to care for it and what to do for long-lasting healthy plants.”

Genoa Friendship Gardens was established in southeast Houston in 1999 as a satellite garden designed to expand Texas A&M AgriLife Extension horticultural outreach across Harris County. It began with 14 exhibit gardens demonstrating subjects including vegetables, herbs, roses, perennials, fruit trees, water features and water-conscious landscaping. Today, the site also includes trial gardens, greenhouse facilities, an educational center and resources where residents can connect with Master Gardeners.

The garden regularly welcomes the public, including through Open Garden Days, when visitors can explore demonstration areas and speak with Master Gardeners about home gardening.

For residents who enjoy gardening but have never visited Genoa Friendship Gardens, the October events provide an easy reason to discover a local educational resource that exists year-round.

The organization is also an entry point for residents who want to take their interest in gardening further.

The Texas Master Gardener program is an educational volunteer program conducted through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. In Harris County, prospective Master Gardeners complete specialized horticultural training and volunteer service before becoming certified. Current Harris County requirements include 72 hours of training and 60 hours of approved volunteer service, with volunteers contributing to settings such as demonstration gardens, community gardens, schools and other AgriLife programs.

Certified volunteers continue giving back each year through community service and continuing education.
