Save on Back-to-School Items During Texas Sales Tax Holiday Set for August 9-11

July 30 2024

Marking its 25th year, the annual Texas Sales Tax Holiday is set for the weekend of Aug. 9-11, as announced by Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar. The Comptroller invites shoppers to save money on clothes and school supplies by taking advantage of the state's longest-standing sales tax holiday.

The holiday, established by state law, gives tax exemption to items such as clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100. This allows buyers to save approximately $8 for every $100 spent during the tax holiday. The dates of the Sales Tax Holiday, as well as the list of tax-exempt items, are determined by the Texas Legislature.

"For a quarter of a century, Texans have saved more than $1.8 billion on everything from blue jeans to ballpoint pens in preparation for the back-to-school bell," said Hegar. "As the father of three, I know firsthand how these expenses add up over the years, and this weekend is the perfect time for folks to save some of their hard-earned cash on items they need."

Comptroller Hegar's office estimates that, through the sales tax holiday this year, shoppers will save about $143.4 million in state and local sales tax. The tax-free items can be purchased in-person or through other means such as online, by phone, or by mail. The list of tax-free apparel and school supplies is available on the Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Two conditions exist for a purchase to be exempt from taxation during this annual sales tax holiday: either the item is delivered to, and paid for, by the customer during the exemption period, or the customer orders and pays for the item, and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery occurs after the exemption period concludes.
