San Antonio Spurs and Methodist Healthcare Celebrate 10-Year Partnership with Special Gift for Newborns
For many San Antonio families, being a Spurs fan is something passed down from one generation to the next. Now, some of the city's newest residents will have a little piece of that tradition waiting for them when they arrive.
The San Antonio Spurs and Methodist Healthcare are celebrating 10 years of partnership with a limited-edition baby blanket for newborns delivered at Methodist Healthcare hospitals throughout 2026, while supplies last.
Announced October 1, the commemorative blanket features branding from both organizations and marks a decade of collaboration that has reached far beyond the basketball court. From helping children develop confidence through youth sports to bringing encouragement to hospital patients and teaching lifesaving skills to thousands of South Texans, the partnership has become part of the community in ways that extend well beyond game day.
For families welcoming a baby this year, the anniversary brings a small but meaningful keepsake, one that connects a new beginning with one of San Antonio's most recognizable hometown traditions.
A Special Welcome for San Antonio's Newest Spurs Fans
The limited-edition newborn blanket celebrates the longstanding relationship between Methodist Healthcare and Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E), which began in 2016.
According to the organizations, the co-branded blankets will be distributed to newborns at Methodist Healthcare hospitals during 2026, while supplies last. Families should check with their hospital about availability, as the announcement does not specify individual participating facilities or guarantee a blanket for every delivery.
The giveaway reflects a familiar part of San Antonio culture, where Spurs pride often begins long before a child's first basketball game.
For parents and grandparents who have spent years cheering for the Silver and Black, the blanket offers another way to welcome a new family member into a tradition shared by generations of local fans.
But the anniversary is about more than a keepsake. It also recognizes the work the two organizations have accomplished together over the past decade.
Ten Years of Supporting San Antonio Families, Patients and Young Athletes
Methodist Healthcare serves as the official healthcare system of both the San Antonio Spurs and San Antonio FC, creating opportunities for the organizations to work together on community health, education, youth development and family-focused activities.
Some of those efforts are familiar to Spurs fans.
The Spurs Ball Kid Program has given young basketball enthusiasts opportunities to participate in the excitement of professional basketball, while in-game baby races have brought memorable moments for families attending games.
Spurs summer youth basketball camps have also provided children opportunities to develop athletic skills, practice teamwork and build confidence. Additional educational and leadership programs have helped young people develop skills that can serve them both on and off the court.
Inside Methodist Healthcare hospitals, the partnership has taken on a more personal role.
Over the years, Spurs players, coaches and team representatives have visited patients, families and healthcare workers, offering encouragement during hospital stays and recognizing the people who care for South Texas residents.
For a child facing a difficult medical experience or a family navigating an uncertain time, a visit from a hometown athlete can provide a welcome distraction and a moment of connection.
The partnership has also created opportunities for Spurs representatives to learn directly from Methodist Healthcare's medical teams about the work happening throughout the hospital system.
"For the past decade, our partnership with Spurs Sports & Entertainment has been about a shared commitment to South Texas," said Dan Miller, President and CEO of Methodist Healthcare. "Whether it’s bringing joy to a patient on one of their hardest days, connecting with and learning from our care teams, or helping our community make informed choices about their health, the Spurs have been there alongside us. We’re grateful for their partnership over the past 10 years and look forward to all we can continue to do together for South Texas."
From CPR Training to Cancer Awareness, Partnership Reaches Across South Texas
While many residents associate the Spurs with basketball, the organization's work with Methodist Healthcare has also focused on helping families make informed decisions about their health and safety.
One of the partnership's notable accomplishments involves Hands-Only CPR training for more than 4,000 community members through Heart Month activities.
Hands-Only CPR is an emergency response technique that uses chest compressions to help maintain blood circulation when someone experiences cardiac arrest. Learning the technique can help bystanders respond while waiting for emergency medical professionals to arrive.
The organizations have also collaborated on cancer awareness campaigns, encouraging residents to pay attention to their health and learn more about prevention, screening and available medical resources.
Other community initiatives have included school supply drives, educational outreach focused on lifesaving skills and annual holiday programs that provide decorated Christmas trees and wreaths to local families.
Together, these efforts illustrate how a partnership between a professional sports organization and a regional healthcare provider can reach people in everyday settings, from classrooms and basketball courts to hospitals and neighborhood homes.
Methodist Healthcare's Role in San Antonio Goes Beyond the Basketball Partnership
The 10-year anniversary also highlights the scale of Methodist Healthcare's presence in San Antonio and the surrounding South Texas region.
Methodist Healthcare operates through a 50-50 co-ownership arrangement between Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc. and HCA Healthcare.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries is described as South Texas' largest non-public funding source of community healthcare for uninsured patients, while HCA Healthcare is a major national provider of healthcare services.
The ownership structure helps support Methodist Healthcare Ministries' charitable mission, including access to quality healthcare and charitable care for patients who need assistance.
According to Methodist Healthcare, the system has invested $2.18 billion in the community over the past 10 years, reflecting its broader role in healthcare access and regional services.
The healthcare system reports:
- 30 facilities, including 11 hospitals and 10 freestanding emergency departments.
- More than 832,191 inpatient and outpatient visits annually.
- Approximately 506,488 emergency room patients served annually.
- A workforce of approximately 15,000 people, making it San Antonio's third-largest private employer.
Methodist Healthcare provides a wide range of specialized medical services, including neurosurgery, cardiovascular care, oncology and women's health services.
The system also reports having 25 surgical robots, positioning it as a national leader in robotic surgery, and operates what it identifies as the nation's largest Live Donor Kidney Transplant program.
For San Antonio residents, these services represent an important part of the region's healthcare infrastructure, particularly as families seek access to specialized treatment, emergency care and maternity services close to home.
Spurs Sports & Entertainment's Growing Community Presence
The partnership also reflects the broader role of Spurs Sports & Entertainment in San Antonio and across South Texas.
Although the San Antonio Spurs are the organization's most recognizable team, SS&E operates a portfolio of professional sports teams, entertainment venues and community experiences.
The organization owns and operates the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA, the Austin Spurs of the NBA G League and San Antonio FC of the United Soccer League. It also serves as the controlling member of LOVB Austin, expanding its involvement in professional volleyball.
SS&E manages day-to-day operations at several major sports and entertainment facilities, including Frost Bank Center, The Rock at La Cantera, Toyota Field and Ricos STAR Soccer Complex.
With more than 1,000 full-time and part-time employees, the organization provides live sporting events, entertainment and digital fan experiences while maintaining a presence in youth sports and community programming.
The SS&E investor group is led by Managing Partner Peter J. Holt.
For San Antonio residents, the organization's reach means that the Spurs name represents more than the NBA franchise. It is also connected to youth athletic development, professional soccer, regional entertainment and community partnerships that bring together families throughout the area.
"Methodist Healthcare is an outstanding example of what it means to be a mission-driven organization, with its world class doctors and staff working tirelessly to improve health outcomes in our city and provide comprehensive family care," said Frank Miceli, chief commercial officer at Spurs Sports & Entertainment. "Over the past ten years we’ve seen our partnership come to life in so many special ways, through youth sports, patient visits and more, and we look forward to many more years of working together to positively impact the health and happiness of our San Antonio community."
What San Antonio Families Should Know About the 2026 Newborn Blanket Giveaway
