Texas A&M University-San Antonio Welcomes Record Freshman Class as Enrollment Grows and New Degree Programs Expand

San Antonio / New Braunfels
October 08 2026

For more San Antonio families, the possibility of earning a college degree close to home is becoming a reality. Texas A&M University-San Antonio has welcomed its largest class of first-time college students in university history, marking another milestone for the growing South Side institution and its role in expanding access to higher education across the region.

According to enrollment figures released October 8, Texas A&M University-San Antonio welcomed 1,322 first-time-in-college students for Fall 2026, surpassing last year's record of 1,281. While the increase represents 41 additional students, the milestone reflects the university's continued efforts to attract students seeking affordable college tuition, career-focused degree programs and opportunities to build their futures without leaving the San Antonio area.

The growth is particularly meaningful for families navigating the cost of higher education. With approximately two-thirds of A&M-San Antonio's undergraduate students representing the first generation in their families to attend college, the university serves a population for whom earning a degree can open doors well beyond the classroom.

A Growing University With Deep Roots in San Antonio's South Side

Located on San Antonio's South Side, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is one of the youngest institutions in the Texas A&M University System, but its role in the region's educational landscape has grown considerably since its establishment as a standalone university in 2009.

The university's history reaches back to 2000, when the Texas A&M University System established a presence in San Antonio through a partnership with Texas A&M University-Kingsville. What began as an effort to expand access to higher education eventually developed into a four-year public university serving students from across South Texas and beyond.

Originally focused on upper-level undergraduate and graduate education, A&M-San Antonio began welcoming freshmen and sophomores in 2016, creating additional opportunities for students to complete their college education at the university.

Today, the institution offers undergraduate and graduate programs across fields including business, education, science, technology and the liberal arts. Its expanding campus represents a significant investment in an area of San Antonio that has historically had fewer nearby options for public university education.

For students living on the South Side and in surrounding Bexar County communities, that local access can make a meaningful difference when balancing college expenses, employment and family responsibilities.

Fall 2026 Enrollment Reflects Strong Connections to Bexar County and Texas

Although the incoming freshman class reached a new record, the university's overall enrollment figures also offer a closer look at the students choosing A&M-San Antonio.

Total Fall 2026 enrollment stands at 7,697 students, with the overwhelming majority coming from Texas communities.

According to the university:

  • 75% of students are from Bexar County, reflecting the institution's strong local enrollment base.
  • 98.6% of students are from Texas, while others represent 25 additional states and Puerto Rico.
  • Approximately two-thirds of undergraduate students are first-generation college students, highlighting the university's role in helping families establish new educational traditions.
  • 60% of undergraduate students are eligible for federal Pell Grants, which support students with demonstrated financial need.

The university also reported an increase in student credit hours, rising from 84,568 in Fall 2025 to 86,118 this semester. The figure measures the combined academic credit hours students are taking and provides another indication of educational activity across campus.

University President Salvador Hector Ochoa said the record freshman class reflects growing confidence among students and their families.

"This record enrollment of our first-year cohort reflects the growing confidence that students and families have in Texas A&M University-San Antonio and our commitment to providing an affordable, high-quality education," said President Salvador Hector Ochoa. "As our University continues to grow, we remain focused on creating opportunities for students to achieve their educational goals while preparing them to contribute to the economic and civic vitality of our region and state."

Jaguar Promise Scholarship Helps Make College More Affordable

For families considering the cost of attending college in San Antonio, affordability remains an important part of the university's mission.

One of its financial assistance initiatives is Jaguar Promise, a scholarship program designed to help eligible Texas students cover tuition and mandatory fees while also providing a stipend for books.

The program is intended to reduce financial barriers that might otherwise prevent qualified students from pursuing a four-year degree.

According to the university, the number of first-year students receiving Jaguar Promise scholarships increased 21% compared with last year, reflecting broader participation in the program.

That growth comes as many families continue weighing the cost of tuition, textbooks, transportation and other expenses associated with attending college.

For students who qualify, programs such as Jaguar Promise can help make a public university education more financially manageable. Families interested in applying should review the university's current eligibility requirements, financial aid deadlines and scholarship conditions before making enrollment decisions.

Additional information about tuition assistance and admissions is available through the university's official website.

Supporting Military Families and Veterans in Military City USA

A&M-San Antonio's enrollment also reflects the strong military connections that have long been part of the San Antonio community.

With Joint Base San Antonio and its associated military installations playing a major role in the region, educational opportunities for veterans, active-duty service members and military families remain an important consideration.

For Fall 2026, military-affiliated students account for 16% of undergraduate enrollment and 19% of graduate enrollment at A&M-San Antonio.

The university provides educational opportunities and support services for military-connected students, including those transitioning from military service to civilian careers or pursuing additional credentials while balancing family and professional responsibilities.

These students bring a wide range of experiences to campus, adding to a student population that includes recent high school graduates, working adults and individuals returning to college to advance their careers.

New Biomedical Sciences and Educational Leadership Degrees Expand Academic Options

The enrollment milestone comes as Texas A&M University-San Antonio continues investing in new academic programs intended to respond to changing workforce needs.

During the Fall 2026 semester, the university introduced its Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, expanding graduate-level opportunities for educators and professionals pursuing leadership roles in education.

The program adds to the university's academic offerings at a time when school districts and educational institutions across Texas continue to need qualified administrators and instructional leaders.

Looking ahead, A&M-San Antonio plans to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences in Fall 2027.

The upcoming degree will expand undergraduate options for students interested in biological and health-related sciences, providing another potential academic pathway for students considering careers or advanced education in those fields.

Both programs aim to give students more options to pursue careers in education, healthcare and other fields that serve the San Antonio community.

The university is also continuing to develop new academic and athletic facilities as part of its long-term campus expansion.

What Record Enrollment Means for San Antonio's Future

For San Antonio residents, the significance of A&M-San Antonio's growth extends beyond the number of students arriving on campus each fall.

As the city continues to develop, access to higher education plays an important role in helping local students prepare for careers, supporting workforce development and creating opportunities for residents to remain connected to their communities.

A university that draws three-quarters of its students from Bexar County is particularly connected to the families, schools and neighborhoods around it.

For a high school senior considering college options, having a public university nearby may provide another path toward earning a degree. For a parent who never had the opportunity to attend college, watching a child become the first in the family to pursue higher education can represent a significant personal milestone.

And for working adults or military-connected students, expanded degree programs may provide opportunities to continue their education while maintaining existing responsibilities.

Those possibilities help explain why A&M-San Antonio's enrollment growth matters beyond the campus itself.

What's Next for Texas A&M University-San Antonio?

With a record incoming freshman class, increased participation in Jaguar Promise and additional academic programs on the horizon, A&M-San Antonio is continuing its transition into a larger educational destination on San Antonio's South Side.

The planned Fall 2027 launch of the biomedical sciences bachelor's degree will be one of the university's next academic developments to watch, alongside continued investment in campus facilities and student support programs.
