For Houston-area families looking for something different to do on a Friday or Saturday night, the coming season at Sam Houston Race Park will offer considerably more than horses crossing a finish line.

Tickets are now on sale for the northwest Houston track’s 2026-2027 live racing season, which begins with Thoroughbred racing on Dec. 18, 2026, and continues into June with Quarter Horse racing. Along the way, Sam Houston Race Park has scheduled a packed calendar of family festivals, appreciation nights, tastings, giveaways and events ranging from camel and ostrich races to corgi races and a lawn mower competition.

The season also brings December Thoroughbred racing back to Sam Houston Race Park for the first time in 17 years.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the community back to Sam Houston Race Park for an unforgettable season of high-energy racing and entertainment,” said Bryan Pettigrew, vice president and general manager of Texas Racing Operations. “Our team has worked tirelessly to curate an atmosphere that captures the spirit of Houston, and we cannot wait to see our grandstands filled with fans ready to experience the pure adrenaline of the track.”

Thoroughbred Racing Returns Dec. 18, Followed by Quarter Horses

The 2026-2027 Sam Houston Race Park Thoroughbred meet will run from Dec. 18, 2026, through April 3, 2027. Racing is scheduled on Friday and Saturday nights during December and January, with Thursday racing added beginning in February.

The Quarter Horse racing season follows from April 15 through June 12, 2027.

For someone who has never attended live horse racing, the difference between the two racing seasons is fairly easy to understand.

Thoroughbred racing typically features horses competing over longer distances, with races requiring a combination of speed, positioning and endurance. Quarter Horses, meanwhile, are especially known for explosive acceleration and sprint racing. The American Quarter Horse takes its name from its historic reputation for exceptional speed over a quarter-mile distance.

For spectators, much of the experience happens around the races themselves. Fans can watch horses and jockeys before a race, follow the field from the grandstand or indoor viewing areas and spend the time between races dining, talking through their picks or simply taking in the atmosphere. Adults who choose to wager can review the racing program and odds before placing a bet, but wagering is not required to attend or enjoy the races.

Sam Houston Race Park is an all-ages venue, while guests must be at least 21 years old to wager. The track also offers resources intended to help newcomers understand handicapping and wagering.

A Houston Racing Destination Since 1994

For longtime Houstonians, Sam Houston Race Park is hardly a newcomer to the local entertainment landscape.

Located about 15 miles northwest of downtown Houston, the racetrack opened in 1994 and has since served as both a live racing venue and a destination for concerts, group outings, dining and special events. The property is owned by PENN Entertainment Inc.

Its location makes it particularly accessible to communities across northwest Harris County and the greater Houston area, and the facility has evolved beyond a traditional grandstand-and-track setup. Guests can choose among indoor and outdoor areas, reserved clubhouse seating, dining and private group spaces.

That variety is also part of the track’s effort to make race nights approachable for people who may know little — or nothing — about horse racing when they arrive.

Families Can Watch Without Buying Reserved Seats

Sam Houston Race Park plans to offer family-friendly free seating with indoor and outdoor viewing areas during live racing, along with paid options for guests looking for a reserved experience.

Box and reserved seating will be available on the second-floor Clubhouse Level. The Winner’s Circle Restaurant, which accommodates up to 600 race fans, combines dining with views of the track and nightly dinner specials. Private suites are available for groups ranging from approximately 10 to 100 guests.

Most regular Thursday, Friday and Saturday race nights are slated for a 6:30 p.m. first post, although special post times may apply on select dates. Fans should check the official schedule before visiting because racing dates, post times and promotions can change.

The track’s current admissions information lists live-racing admission at $8 for adults, $5 for seniors age 62 and older and $5 for children ages 4 to 12, with children younger than 4 admitted free.

Holiday Racing Opens a Busy Special-Event Calendar

The season opens with Holiday at the Races on Dec. 18 and 19, followed by Dollar Day at the Races on Dec. 26 and a T-shirt giveaway Dec. 27.

New Year’s weekend brings a calendar giveaway Jan. 1 and season ticket giveaway Jan. 2.

January continues with Healthcare Appreciation on Jan. 9, a koozie giveaway Jan. 15, an advertised wrestling event Jan. 16, handwarmer giveaway Jan. 22 and Dino Run/Dino Dig on Jan. 23.

One of the month’s biggest racing dates arrives Jan. 24 with the Houston Racing Festival. The month closes with a phone wallet giveaway Jan. 29 and bourbon tasting Jan. 30.

February Brings Dog Racing, Go Texan Day and FFA & 4-H Recognition

February’s schedule mixes traditional racing dates with some of Sam Houston Race Park’s more unconventional attractions.

A foam can holder giveaway is planned for Feb. 5, followed by Wiener Dog Racing on Feb. 6.

The Shannon Jewelers Diamond Dig returns Feb. 12, followed by Texas Preview Day on Feb. 13. A keychain giveaway is scheduled Feb. 19, with R&B Soul Day on Feb. 20.

As Houston heads toward rodeo season, Sam Houston Race Park will hold Go Texan Day on Feb. 26, followed by FFA & 4-H Day on Feb. 27 — giving local agricultural education programs and youth participants their own place on the racing calendar.

Camel and Ostrich Racing Returns in March

One of the season’s more unusual spectator events is scheduled for March 5 and 6, when Camel & Ostrich Racing returns to the track.

March also includes a hat giveaway March 12, Horsepower & Brews on March 13, the Astronaut Run on March 19and Texas Champions Day on March 20.

Texas Champions Day puts the focus squarely back on the horses, highlighting Texas-bred competitors and the state’s racing industry.

From March 25 through March 27, the track plans a $1 million Hole-in-One Golf promotion, while Family Festival is set for March 27.

A sports towel giveaway on April 2 helps close out the Thoroughbred portion of the season, which concludes April 3.

Quarter Horse Season Opens With a Packed April

Quarter Horse racing begins April 15, with several promotions arriving almost immediately.

Teacher Appreciation, another $1 million Hole-in-One promotion and Hispanic Heritage Night are all scheduled for April 16.

The following evening, April 17, brings a Margarita Festival.

Families with young racing fans may want to circle April 23 for Kids Autograph Day, while one of the track’s popular non-equine competitions returns April 24 with Corgi Dog Racing.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day is scheduled for April 30.

Kentucky Derby Weekend Comes to Houston

Fans do not have to travel to Churchill Downs to make a day out of one of horse racing’s best-known traditions.

Sam Houston Race Park plans Kentucky Derby Day and Derby Fest on May 1, giving Houston-area race fans a place to watch and celebrate the Kentucky Derby while the local Quarter Horse meet is underway.

A commemorative cup day follows May 7, with wine tasting May 8, a lanyard giveaway May 14, bag giveaway May 15 and T-shirt giveaway May 21.

Character Day is scheduled May 22, followed by Preakness Day on May 23.

The month closes with First Responders Day on May 29.

Belmont Day and Lawn Mower Races Close Out the Season

The final stretch of the 2026-2027 Sam Houston Race Park calendar begins with a sunglasses giveaway June 4 and Belmont Day June 5.

Another Dollar Day at the Races is scheduled June 11.

Then, on June 12, the Quarter Horse meet and live racing calendar concludes with Shoppa’s Lawn Mower Races, adding one final unconventional race to a season filled with them.

What to Know Before Visiting Sam Houston Race Park

For first-time visitors, a night at Sam Houston Race Park does not have to begin with understanding odds, racing terminology or handicapping.

A family can come simply to watch the horses and enjoy an event. A racing enthusiast can study the program and follow each field closely. Groups can reserve a table, box or suite, while adults interested in wagering can learn how the process works once they arrive.

The upcoming schedule is designed to appeal to both longtime racing fans and newcomers, with traditional race nights alongside family activities, festivals, giveaways and unusual competitions that make the track an easy place to spend an evening.
