Salem Lutheran Church in Tomball Launches Major Renovation Projects to Expand Community and Educational Outreach
In a blend of heritage and forward-looking vision, Salem Lutheran Church in Tomball is undertaking two major renovation projects in 2026 that signal a significant step toward enhancing its community impact and campus infrastructure.
Located at22601 Lutheran Church Rd, Tomball, TX 77377, Salem Lutheran Church will break ground this summer on both a Worship Center Renovation – Phase 1 and a large-scale Community Center Renovation. Together, these projects represent a combined investment of over $7.8 million, reshaping more than 130,000 square feet of space to better serve the congregation and surrounding community of northwest Harris County.
Worship Center Renovation – Phase 1
Starting June 1, 2026, Salem will begin its first phase of renovations around the church’s central Worship Center. With an estimated cost of $2.56 million, this 39,470-square-foot renovation will focus on several updates:
- A redesigned and more welcoming lobby entry
- A new coffee-serving station for gathering and connection
- Fresh spaces for student ministry, including a student café and reimagined office areas
Construction is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026.
Community Center Renovation for Educational Expansion
In a parallel project, the Community Center—spanning a substantial 90,786 square feet—will be reconfigured to accommodate the future expansion of Salem Lutheran School, which currently serves nearly 400 K-8 students.
This project, estimated at $5.33 million, begins on the same date, June 1, 2026, and will run through June 3, 2027. The south portion of the building will be transformed into a secure and updated educational space to support the growing student population.

Both projects are a central part of Salem NEXT, a long-term, multi-phase initiative designed to transform the church’s campus and ensure its continued ability to meet the needs of families in Tomball and the surrounding communities. The full master plan—refined over the last two decades and now moving forward with community support and phased funding—carries a vision of sustainability, growth, and expanded impact.
A Rich History with an Eye on the Future
Salem Lutheran Church has been a cornerstone of the Tomball area since its founding in 1851, when Pastor Heinrich Braschler arrived from Switzerland and preached his first sermon to German settlers in Spring Creek. Since then, the church has grown from humble beginnings into a sprawling, multi-use campus that spans 100 acres and includes worship, education, and community service facilities.
The renovations align with Salem's enduring commitment to the community—offering Christ-centered education, outreach programs, and ministry partnerships both locally and globally. From disaster relief to medical mission trips, the church’s reach continues far beyond its campus.
But this latest effort is focused squarely on home.
“We’ve outgrown many of our ministry, school and preschool spaces—even to the point where we regularly turn preschool families away,” said church leadership in a project overview. “It’s time to both enlarge and upgrade.”
Planning for Growth and Efficiency
The renovations are part of a larger $25–28 million phased plan that also includes constructing a new preschool, expanding student ministry space, and building a new multi-purpose chapel in later phases. The campus transformation is designed to not only accommodate growth but also to reduce operational costs through energy-efficient systems, modernized windows, and durable, low-maintenance materials.

Funds for these efforts will be generated through a combination of a multi-year capital campaign, increased church and school revenue, and the sale of approximately 50 acres of surplus land. Church leaders emphasize that construction timelines will proceed as financial resources become available—avoiding excessive debt and ensuring ministry continuity.
A Community Resource for the Greater Tomball Area
With these upgrades, Salem Lutheran Church anticipates increased access for community groups, local outreach initiatives, and partnerships such as its collaboration with Alodia Basketball. The enhanced and secure educational spaces will also better serve the current student body while allowing room for future growth.
For residents of Tomball, Cypress, Spring, and surrounding communities, the upcoming renovations represent a significant change to Salem Lutheran’s facilities, aimed at expanding educational and ministry space while supporting ongoing community use.
As the church community continues to weave its “tapestry on the loom,” the upcoming renovations mark a pivotal chapter—one that aims to build upon 175 years of local impact while preparing for generations yet to come.
