Safely Dispose of Unused Medications at Katy ISD's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 26

October 07 2024

The Katy ISD Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, set to take place on Saturday, October 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the district’s Law Enforcement Center, located at 20370 Franz Road, Katy, TX 77449.

For 15 years, the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has provided Americans with a safe and easy way to dispose of unneeded medications. This initiative aims to eliminate old, unwanted, or expired medications, which can sometimes lead to addiction.

The DEA highlights various ways prescription medications can be misused, including taking medication prescribed to someone else, using it in a manner other than prescribed, or mixing it with illicit drugs or alcohol. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), opioids—such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine—are among the most commonly misused prescription pain medications.

Community members are encouraged to bring their expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications to Katy ISD's Law Enforcement Center for safe disposal. However, please note that needles or sharp objects will not be accepted, and liquids must be presented in their original prescribed containers.

“During last fall’s Take Back Day, we collected 20 boxes of prescription medications,” said Chief Henry Gaw of the Katy ISD Police Department. “I appreciate the continued support of our community members as we work to keep everyone safe.”

Since its inception, the DEA and its local partners have successfully collected more than 17 million pounds of unused prescription medication through National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
