Russ Poppe Family Park Introduces New Pickleball Courts as Sport Gains Momentum in Cypress

March 12 2025

Russ Poppe Family Park, located at 11675 Grant Road, Cypress, TX 77070, has recently unveiled new pickleball courts, offering residents enhanced recreational amenities.

This development is part of Harris County Precinct 3's initiative to introduce pickleball facilities across three parks: Russ Poppe Family Park in Cypress, Meyer Park in Spring, and I.T. May Park near Tomball. Construction for these projects commenced in September 2024, with Meyer Park's courts opening in early February 2025, alongside a new inclusive playground.

Russ Poppe Family Park, which is open from 7:00 AM to dusk daily, honors Russ Poppe, a respected leader in Harris County’s infrastructure and flood control efforts. Dedicated in August 2021, the park recognizes his role in securing over $1 billion in federal grants for flood mitigation projects.

Understanding Pickleball: America's Fastest-Growing Sport

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Played on a court similar in size to a doubles badminton court, it utilizes solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The game can be played in singles or doubles formats, with players volleying the ball over a 34-inch-high net. The objective is to continue rallying until one side commits a fault, such as failing to return the ball or hitting it out of bounds.

Invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, pickleball has experienced exponential growth in the United States. By 2023, it was estimated to have over 13.6 million players nationwide. For three consecutive years—2021, 2022, and 2023—the sport was recognized as the fastest-growing in the U.S. Its popularity is attributed to a short learning curve, appeal across various age groups, and low startup costs.
