Royal ISD Voters Approve $72 Million Stadium Bond, Marking a New Era for Growing District
As Royal ISD continues to grow alongside the rapid development stretching across Waller County and the Brookshire area, voters have approved a project many families say represents far more than a stadium.
Unofficial election results from the May 2, 2026 bond election show voters passed Proposition A, authorizing a proposed $72 million districtwide multi-use stadium project that district leaders say is intended to support future student enrollment, expanding extracurricular programs, and long-term community use.
For many in Royal ISD, the outcome represents a milestone moment in the district’s evolution — one centered not only on athletics, but on creating a permanent home for student achievements, graduation ceremonies, fine arts performances, and community events.
The proposed stadium, planned near the future Royal High School site at FM 362 and McGregor Lane, is designed to accommodate approximately 7,500 spectators and serve students districtwide as enrollment projections continue climbing sharply over the next decade.
Community members celebrated the unofficial results across social media Saturday evening, sharing excitement about the vision becoming reality for current and future generations of Royal students.
“Imagine it, 7,500 fans cheering on Royal athletes under the lights on OUR competition field,” supporters wrote following the vote announcement. “Our track stars flying around an 8-lane track that belongs to US. Our band filling OUR stadium with sound. Our seniors crossing the graduation stage at HOME.”
Why the Royal ISD Stadium Bond Was Proposed
District officials said the May 2026 bond proposal was part of Royal ISD’s broader long-range facilities planning effort as enrollment growth accelerates throughout the district.
According to district data, Royal ISD enrollment increased from 2,710 students at the start of the 2025-26 school year to 3,219 students by April 2026. A PASA demographic study projects enrollment could exceed 8,700 students within the next 10 years.
The district is simultaneously preparing for a future high school designed to serve approximately 3,000 students.
Royal ISD officials noted that the existing Falcon Stadium has been in use for more than 60 years and would require substantial long-term repairs and upgrades to meet future district needs and accessibility standards.
Recent structural assessments identified maintenance concerns involving bleachers, lighting, restrooms, concession facilities, track infrastructure, seating areas, concrete deterioration, corrosion, and ADA accessibility improvements.
The current Falcon Stadium is also located approximately 4.5 miles from the future high school site, creating additional transportation and logistical challenges for student activities and events.
What the New Royal ISD Stadium Project Includes
The proposed districtwide stadium project is designed to support multiple student programs and community activities beyond football games alone.
According to Royal ISD planning documents, the proposed facility is expected to support:
- Football, soccer, and track programs
- Band and fine arts performances
- Cheer and spirit events
- Graduation ceremonies
- Districtwide student activities
- Community and youth programming
Planned project features include:
- Approximately 7,500 seats
- Steel and aluminum bleachers
- An 8-lane competition track
- Competition field with synthetic turf or natural grass
- Sports lighting
- A conventional press box with film deck
- Video board and broadcasting systems
- Distributed audio systems
- Concession and restroom facilities
- Home and visitor fieldhouse areas
- Parking, plazas, and supporting infrastructure
District officials said a community bond task force reviewed several seating capacity options — including 3,700-seat and 5,500-seat concepts — before identifying the 7,500-seat proposal as the preferred long-term planning scenario based on projected growth and future district flexibility.
What the Bond Means for Taxpayers
If finalized, the bond would be repaid through Royal ISD’s Interest & Sinking tax rate, which can only be used for voter-approved capital improvement projects.
District officials stated the proposed bond cannot be used for teacher salaries, district operations, or classroom instructional programming.
The projected tax impact associated with the proposal was estimated at approximately $0.0165 per $100 of taxable value.
For a homeowner with a $250,000 home after exemptions, the estimated increase would be about $1.44 per month.
Royal ISD also noted homeowners aged 65 and older who qualify for the homestead exemption would not see an increase above their existing school tax ceiling on their primary residence as a result of the bond unless additional improvements are made to the property.
A Defining Moment for Royal ISD’s Future
The passage of Proposition A arrives during a period of rapid transformation throughout Royal ISD and surrounding communities as residential growth continues expanding west of Houston.
For supporters, the approved stadium project represents an investment in creating a centralized hub for student life and district identity as Royal ISD prepares for the next generation of growth.
The future facility is expected to provide a permanent home for Friday night football, district graduations, track meets, soccer competitions, band performances, and community gatherings for years to come.
“To every family, every student, every fan who believed in Royal, you made this happen,” supporters shared following the election. “Thank you.”
As official canvassing and next-phase planning move forward, residents across Royal ISD will now begin watching how the project develops from concept into one of the district’s largest community investments to date.
