Rotary Club of Cypress-Fairbanks President-Elect Awarded Rotarian of the Year for Local Rotary District

May 07 2024

Emi Abiera-Chemat, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Cypress-Fairbanks, has been awarded the influential title of Rotarian of the Year for District 5890. Since 2018, Abiera-Chemat has been an active member of this Rotary Club, but her Rotarian journey first began in 1992 with the Rotary Club of Gloria Maris, notable as the first all-female club in the Philippines.

Abiera-Chemat's dynamic influence within the Cypress-Fairbanks club has been marked by her ability to identify community needs, initiate service projects, orchestrate an annual golf tournament fundraiser, and actively participate in leadership roles in the district and school Interact clubs.

"Emi represents our club exceptionally well," said Club President Blair W. Haynie. "Her embodiment of the Rotary commitment to Service Above Self is truly admirable. We eagerly anticipate her term as president for 2024-2025."

The Rotary Club of Cypress-Fairbanks, chartered by Rotary International in 1970, actively engages its members to serve the community. The club's Foundation supports local, regional, national, and international organizations focusing on literacy, hunger relief, disaster response, human rights, and peace initiatives.

The small yet active Cypress-Fairbanks club, under the leadership of Abiera-Chemat, supports five Interact clubs - the most any club in the district supports. Beyond her services to the club, she will also serve as Co-Chair, Interact District 5890, until 2025.

Rotary District 5890 encompasses Harris County and the seven surrounding counties and boasts more than 60 Rotary Clubs, eight Rotaract clubs, over 70 Interact clubs, and twelve EarlyAct FirstKnight Character Education Curriculum campuses. The district, home to more than 2,700 Rotarians, is recognized for its members' generosity, self-reliance, individualism, patriotism, and a strong sense of community responsibility.

District Governor Heather Rimato announced the prestigious Rotarian of the Year honor at the district's annual conference held in April.
