March 13 2026

The smell of slow-smoked brisket and the sound of live music will soon fill the air in Lytle as pitmasters, families, and barbecue fans gather for the Ranch Trash Smoke Showdown BBQ Cook-Off on May 1 and May 2, 2026 at Lytle Memorial VFW Post 12041.

Set at 1425 FM 2790 in Lytle, Texas, the two-day event promises a classic South Texas weekend filled with competitive barbecue, live entertainment, local vendors, and activities designed to bring the community together. Organizers say the cook-off will highlight the region’s deep-rooted barbecue traditions while also serving as a gathering place for residents, veterans, and visitors from across Atascosa County and beyond.

For many in Lytle and surrounding communities, events like this are about more than food. They are opportunities to reconnect with neighbors, celebrate local culture, and support organizations that serve veterans and families throughout the region.

A Weekend of Championship BBQ and Local Entertainment

At the heart of the event is a sanctioned barbecue competition featuring categories such as chicken, ribs, and brisket, staples of Texas pitmaster culture. Additional categories include Fully Garnished Jackpot Beans and Cook’s Choice, giving competitors the chance to showcase creativity alongside traditional barbecue skills.

Competition turn-in times are scheduled throughout Saturday:

  • 10:00 a.m. — Jackpot Beans
  • 11:00 a.m. — Chef’s Choice
  • 12:00 p.m. — Chicken
  • 1:30 p.m. — Ribs
  • 3:00 p.m. — Brisket

The cook-off follows guidelines from the International Bar-B-Que Cookers Association (IBCA), a well-known sanctioning body in Texas barbecue competitions.

While the pitmasters focus on the smokers, visitors will have plenty to enjoy throughout the day. DJ GeoCue will perform from noon to 3 p.m., followed by the Alejandro Escamilla Band from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., creating a lively soundtrack for the afternoon. The event will also feature a cornhole tournament with an 80/20 payout, along with vendors, food and drinks, and family-friendly activities.

Local radio station Jalapeño 99.9 FM is also expected to be part of Saturday’s entertainment lineup.

Inviting Pitmasters and Vendors from Across South Texas

Organizers are encouraging BBQ teams and pitmasters to participate, with an entry fee of $250. Participants must be 18 years or older, and a cooks meeting is scheduled for Friday evening at 6 p.m. ahead of the competition.

A Community Gathering at Lytle Memorial VFW Post 12041

Hosting the event is Lytle Memorial VFW Post 12041, a local veterans organization that also serves as a community hub for gatherings, events, and support programs.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) traces its origins to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection formed organizations to advocate for healthcare, pensions, and benefits after returning home wounded or ill. Over the decades, the organization has played a significant role in shaping veterans’ policy in the United States, helping establish the Veterans Administration, advocating for GI Bill education benefits, and pushing for healthcare support for veterans exposed to Agent Orange and Gulf War-related illnesses.

Today, the VFW includes nearly two million members and auxiliaries nationwide, contributing more than 8.6 million volunteer hours annually through community service efforts, scholarship programs, and support initiatives for veterans and their families.

Locally, Lytle Memorial VFW Post 12041 operates under the motto “We Honor the Dead By Helping the Living.”The post is open to the public and regularly hosts community events, providing a welcoming gathering place for residents of Lytle and surrounding areas.
