Precinct 5 Vacation Watch Program Helps Keep Homes Safe During Spring Break Travel

March 04 2025

As residents prepare for spring break travel, Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office is reminding those living in a Precinct 5 Contracted Patrol Area to take advantage of the Vacation Watch Program. This free service allows homeowners to request extra patrols around their residence while they are away, providing added peace of mind and security during trips.

How the Vacation Watch Program Works

Homeowners in eligible neighborhoods can submit a Vacation Watch Request if they will be away for more than a day. Deputies patrolling the area will be made aware of the vacant home and conduct extra checks to ensure everything remains secure. Requests should be submitted at least three days prior to departure to ensure timely processing.

Residents can submit their request online via the Precinct 5 website or by calling the 24-hour dispatch line at 281-463-6666. If preferred, a deputy can visit the home to take the request in person. Those unsure if they live in a Precinct 5 Contracted Patrol Area can contact dispatch for confirmation.

Benefits of Enrolling in Vacation Watch

Having a home monitored while away can help deter potential burglars and reduce the risk of property crime. Criminals often target unoccupied homes, making it crucial to take preventive steps. Precinct 5’s extra patrols provide homeowners with an additional layer of security, helping ensure their property remains safe until their return.

Additional Tips for Securing Your Home While Away

In addition to enrolling in the Vacation Watch Program, homeowners can take the following precautions to safeguard their property:

1. Notify Your Alarm Company

Precinct 5 recommends setting law enforcement as the primary contact for any alarm triggers while away. This ensures officers are dispatched immediately rather than waiting for homeowner confirmation.

2. Use Smart Lighting Strategies

Leaving lights on continuously can signal an empty home. Instead, use light timers or dusk-to-dawn sensors to give the impression that someone is present. If possible, ask a trusted neighbor to turn lights on and off periodically.

3. Secure Vehicles and Driveways

Never leave valuables in vehicles, whether parked at home or elsewhere. If your driveway will be empty, consider asking a neighbor to park in it, making it appear as though someone is home.

4. Arrange for Pet Care

If pets are staying behind, ensure they have updated ID tags with your contact information in case they escape. Leaving them with a trusted friend, neighbor, or pet sitter can help prevent issues while you're away.

5. Consider a House Sitter

A friend or relative staying at your home can be the best deterrent against burglary. A house sitter can collect mail, tend to pets, adjust lights, and ensure the property appears occupied.

6. Set Up an Emergency Contact

Having a local point of contact who can respond to emergencies on your behalf is highly recommended. This ensures someone nearby can handle urgent situations if needed.

How to Submit a Vacation Watch Request

To enroll in the Vacation Watch Program, submit a request online at constablepct5.com/vacation-watch at least three days before departure. If your trip is approaching sooner, call 281-463-6666 for expedited processing.

Taking these steps, along with utilizing the Precinct 5 Vacation Watch Program, can help ensure a worry-free vacation. By being proactive, homeowners can protect their property, deter crime, and return home to everything just as they left it.
