Parking in The Colonies: Why Parking Within 18 Inches of the Curb Matters
In The Colonies, residential streets serve more than just daily traffic. They are used by school buses, delivery vehicles, sanitation trucks, emergency responders, and neighbors walking with strollers or pets.
Under Texas Transportation Code §545.303(a)(1), a vehicle parked along a curb must be positioned with the right-hand wheels parallel to and within 18 inches of the curb.
That 18-inch requirement applies on public streets throughout unincorporated Harris County.
Why the 18-Inch Rule Exists
When vehicles extend too far into the roadway, even slightly, it can:
- Narrow travel lanes
- Limit two-way traffic flow
- Obstruct larger vehicles
- Reduce visibility near intersections
Roadway width becomes especially important for emergency response.
While roadway clearance requirements are governed by local fire code (often based on the International Fire Code adopted by the applicable Emergency Services District), fire apparatus commonly require approximately 20 feet of unobstructed roadway width for access.

Improperly positioned vehicles can unintentionally reduce that clearance, making it difficult or even impossible for emergency responders to reach those awaiting their arrival.
Enforcement in Unincorporated Harris County
There is no separate county ordinance setting the 18-inch rule — it is established by state law and enforceable by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office under the Texas Transportation Code.
Supporting Property Values and Curb Appeal
Beyond safety, orderly parking contributes to overall neighborhood presentation.
The National Association of Realtors’ Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers consistently reports that neighborhood condition and overall appearance influence buyer perception and purchasing decisions.
Parallel parking close to the curb helps maintain:
- Clean sightlines
- Safer roadways
- Stronger curb appeal
- Consistent neighborhood standards
Whenever possible, parking vehicles on driveways and in garages helps alleviate this concern all together. By keeping streets as clear as possible, residents can help ensure safer access for neighbors, emergency responders, and everyday traffic throughout the community.
