New Tomball Intermediate School Moves Forward as Part of Tomball ISD's $331.6 Million Bond Program

For families across Tomball ISD, one of the most significant school construction projects in the district's recent history is moving closer to reality.

A new Tomball Intermediate School is scheduled to begin construction in September 2026 at 11211 FM 2920 in Tomball, with completion anticipated in March 2028. The approximately $45 million project will replace the district's current Tomball Intermediate School facility, a campus that has served students for more than six decades.

The project represents more than just a new building. For many families, it is part of a broader effort to ensure that Tomball ISD's facilities keep pace with the district's rapid growth while providing modern learning environments, enhanced safety features, and expanded educational opportunities for future generations.

Why the New Tomball Intermediate School Matters

According to Tomball ISD, the current Tomball Intermediate School on Main Street is 64 years old and was built during a very different era of enrollment and traffic patterns.

District leaders have noted that the campus' location along the busy roadway is no longer ideally suited for today's student population. The replacement school will be constructed on a new site designed to better accommodate modern transportation needs, student safety considerations, and future growth.

The new campus is expected to encompass approximately 134,520 square feet and will be designed by Huckabee, a firm with extensive experience in educational facilities throughout Texas.

Once the new school opens, the existing Tomball Intermediate School building will not be abandoned. Instead, Tomball ISD plans to repurpose the campus to expand Special Services programs, creating additional resources for students with specialized educational needs.

Part of a Larger Vision for Tomball ISD

The new intermediate school is one component of Proposition A, a $331.595 million bond package focused on school updates, facility improvements, safety enhancements, transportation upgrades, and new educational facilities across the district.

The bond program aims to create greater parity among campuses while bringing older facilities up to standards found in newer schools.

In addition to the new Tomball Intermediate School, Proposition A includes:

New Schools and Growth Planning
  • A second Pre-Kindergarten Center planned for the south side of the district, designed to serve approximately 500 additional early learners.
  • Land acquisition and site development for a future Elementary School No. 13 to support long-term population growth.
Safety and Security Improvements

Districtwide safety projects include:

  • Enhanced access control systems
  • Expanded radio communication systems
  • Security fencing improvements
  • Impact-resistant security film
  • Additional campus safety upgrades

These improvements are planned across elementary, intermediate, junior high, high school, and support facilities throughout Tomball ISD.

The bond package also addresses aging infrastructure through districtwide improvements including:

  • Classroom LED lighting upgrades
  • Parking lot lighting improvements
  • Generator replacements
  • Electrical system upgrades
  • Storm drain improvements
  • Gas line replacements
  • HVAC modernization projects
  • Chiller and air-handler replacements
Career and Technical Education Expansion

Students could see expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities in fields including:

  • Fire and Emergency Services
  • Automotive Diesel Technology
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC

The district also plans to renovate the current Tomball Intermediate facility to support specialized programs, including information technology training, an esports arena, expanded professional learning spaces, and additional services for adult students with disabilities ages 18-22.

Serving a Growing Student Population

The investment comes as Tomball ISD continues to experience residential and commercial growth across the region.

Tomball Intermediate currently serves more than 1,100 students in grades 5 and 6 and maintains a diverse student population. According to the school's 2025-2026 Campus Improvement Plan, the campus serves 1,179 students and emphasizes collaborative learning, academic intervention, social-emotional support, and family engagement.

The campus earned an overall "B" accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency and is not identified for comprehensive or targeted support and improvement.

As enrollment pressures continue and educational needs evolve, district leaders view the new intermediate school as an investment in both current students and future generations.

What Happens Next?

Construction is expected to begin on Sept. 24, 2026, with substantial completion targeted for March 20, 2028.

Once finished, the new Tomball Intermediate School will provide modern educational spaces designed to support today's instructional practices while helping the district accommodate continued growth across the Tomball area.

For families, the project represents more than a new building. District officials say the new campus is intended to address aging infrastructure, accommodate future enrollment growth, and provide updated learning environments for students in Tomball ISD.
