New Caney ISD Celebrates 2026 Campus Teachers of the Year Across Elementary, Middle and High Schools

May 04 2026

As families across New Caney ISD prepare for the final stretch of the school year, the district is recognizing the educators who have made a lasting impact inside classrooms and across campuses. This spring, New Caney ISD announced its 2026 Campus Teachers of the Year, honoring teachers whose leadership, dedication and commitment to students continue to influence academic achievement and school culture throughout the growing district.

The annual recognition highlights educators who go beyond lesson plans — teachers who create welcoming classrooms, build student confidence, support fellow staff members and help shape the future of New Caney ISD communities from Porter and Valley Ranch to Tavola and New Caney.

District leaders described this year’s honorees as educators who exemplify excellence while cultivating positive learning environments where students can grow academically and personally. Campus principals shared heartfelt reflections on why each educator earned the distinction, offering a glimpse into the relationships and daily efforts that often define the strongest school communities.

Elementary School Teachers Recognized for Leadership and Student Growth

At Bens Branch Elementary, kindergarten teacher Sharon Sparks was praised for her dedication to helping students build independence and confidence early in their educational journey. Principal Ruth Anderson said Sparks consistently prioritizes student growth while supporting colleagues and campus initiatives.

Principal Luissana Davis said Balleza Saleeby “leads with heart” and continually keeps students’ needs at the center of her work.

Crippen Elementary recognized fourth grade teacher Astrid Cordero for her high expectations and deep math content knowledge. Principal Teresa Brent said Cordero pushes students to exceed what they believe possible while maintaining a collaborative and positive presence on campus.

Dogwood Elementary selected fifth grade dual language math and science teacher Iris Uriegas, whose structured and data-driven classroom practices have led to strong student growth and achievement. Principal Michelle Kale highlighted Uriegas’ ability to deliver rigorous instruction while ensuring accessibility for both English and Spanish-speaking students.

At Highlands Elementary, fourth grade teacher Tambria Shaw was celebrated for her reflective teaching practices and commitment to collaborative growth among educators. Principal Rodr’ee Carlile noted Shaw’s intentional focus on building student self-efficacy and confidence.

Kings Manor Elementary honored third grade teacher Jessica Scheig, described by Principal Ashley Larkey as a proactive leader whose energy and engaging classroom experiences inspire both students and fellow teachers.

New Caney Elementary recognized fourth grade teacher Corey Lee for fostering strong relationships and creating an encouraging environment where students feel respected and motivated to succeed. Principal Raquel Sessa said Lee’s positive approach helps students persevere through challenges while growing academically and personally.

Oakley Elementary named kindergarten teacher Brooke Schultz as its Teacher of the Year, citing her empathy, creativity and ability to create a nurturing classroom culture built on meaningful relationships with students and families.

Porter Elementary honored third grade dual language teacher Veronica Hernandez, whose leadership extends beyond her classroom through her work on the campus MTSS committee and third grade team leadership responsibilities.

At Sorters Mill Elementary, fourth grade teacher Leniesha Allen was recognized for her consistency, intentional planning and commitment to building strong academic foundations for students.

Tavola Elementary selected first grade teacher Jeanie Smith, whose mentorship of new teachers and collaborative leadership have strengthened campus culture while helping students build confidence and a love for learning.

Valley Ranch Elementary honored third grade dual language teacher Rosa Morua, praised for her relentless pursuit of excellence and commitment to helping students grow in both math and science while also supporting instructional improvement campuswide.

Middle School Educators Recognized for Engagement and Innovation

Keefer Crossing Middle School named social studies teacher Clayton Fisher as its Teacher of the Year. Principal Juan Ceballos highlighted Fisher’s ability to bring world cultures to life while building strong relationships with students and supporting campus events.

At Pine Valley Middle School, math teacher Kathryn Burgess earned recognition for creating real-world learning experiences, including a student cooking club that connects math concepts to everyday life. Principal Crystal Mayes praised Garcia’s commitment to student success, targeted tutoring efforts and strong communication with families.

High School Teachers Celebrated for Lasting Student Impact

Principal Erica Sykes said Burgess leads with “heart, passion, purpose, and love” while helping students build both confidence and academic foundations.

New Caney High School honored orchestra teacher Kellie Davis for her commitment to helping students showcase their talents and build community through performance opportunities and social engagement.

At Porter High School, science teacher Daniel Cuello earned recognition for his engaging, hands-on classroom approach and ability to connect science instruction to real-world experiences. Assistant Principal Kara Manwaring compared his classroom energy to “Ms. Frizzle,” noting how students are encouraged to think critically and take ownership of their learning.

West Fork High School named English teacher Michael Ogle as its Teacher of the Year, highlighting his ability to build meaningful relationships while helping students find value and enjoyment in literacy.

A Reflection of New Caney ISD’s Growing Community

As New Caney ISD continues to grow alongside the surrounding communities of Porter, New Caney, Valley Ranch and Montgomery County, district leaders say teachers remain at the center of student achievement and campus culture.

The Teachers of the Year recognition serves not only as a celebration of instructional excellence, but also as a reflection of the educators helping shape the future of the district’s schools and neighborhoods. Across every campus, principals emphasized a common theme: these teachers are building environments where students feel supported, challenged and inspired to succeed.

For many families, the recognition also highlights the people working behind the scenes each day to strengthen academic outcomes, mentor young learners and create school communities where students feel connected.

As the school year comes to a close, the district’s 2026 Teachers of the Year stand as examples of the lasting impact dedicated educators can have — not just on test scores or classrooms, but on the confidence, growth and future opportunities of the students they serve.
