Today is National Dog Day! Dogs are some of the most loyal companions, selflessly and tirelessly giving us affection, friendship, protection, entertainment and much more. From Great Danes to miniature poodles, our furry friends touch our hearts in deeply meaningful, life-changing ways.

On this special day, they deserve to be celebrated for all they give to us. Here are a few ways you can celebrate your fur baby today.

  1. Take them to a local dog park, such as Meyer Dog Park on Cypresswood, Bibi & Mini Me Bush Dog Park at John Pundt Park, or Lents Dog Park near Pine Oak Forest
  2. Purchase their favorite treat like marrow bones, soft chews or dog-safe cookies
  3. Give them a luxurious bath and brushing, or drop them off at the groomer for some professional pampering
  4. Go for a walk around your neighborhood
  5. Schedule a doggy play date with a friend or family member so your pup can enjoy some play time with another canine
  6. Enroll your pup in training classes to help sharpen their skills, enhance obedience, strengthen your bond and more
  7. Take their picture in a beautiful spot and share with friends on social media
  8. Teach your pup a new trick
  9. Give them extra cuddles and attention

Growing Your Family

Don't have a dog but you're thinking of adopting one? BARC Animal Shelter is offering reduced adoption fees today and from August 29-31. On September 3 and 4, BARC is hosting a huge adoption event at the George R. Brown from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The Houston Humane Society is also offering waived adoption fees on Saturday, August 27 for long stay pets.

Ever wonder if having pets is worthwhile? Check out this article published by the National Institutes of Health for a deep-dive about the power of pets. Give the gift of a second chance to a homeless dog from a local organization like BARC or the Houston Humane Society!
