As thousands of University of Texas at Austin students prepare to change apartments, leave campus or head home for the summer, an annual citywide partnership is working to ensure that unwanted furniture and household goods do not simply end up along the curb or in a landfill.

MoveOutATX returns to the UT area July 25–31, offering students convenient donation stations across North Campus and West Campus and giving Austin residents an opportunity to pick up free furniture during two evening community markets.

The program, organized by the City of Austin in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin, turns one of the busiest moving periods of the year into a coordinated community reuse effort. For students, it offers a practical alternative to throwing away belongings they cannot take with them. For local nonprofit organizations and residents, it can mean access to furniture, clothing, food and other useful items that still have plenty of life left.

MoveOutATX Donation Stations Open Across the UT Area

Students can donate gently used furniture, household items, small appliances, clothing, cleaning supplies, unopened food and other reusable goods from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily between Saturday, July 25, and Friday, July 31.

Items will only be accepted during those operating hours.

Donation stations will be located at:

• Escala Condos, 1000 W 26th St, Austin, TX 78705, near San Gabriel Street

• Lenox Condos, 915 W 23rd St, Austin, TX 78705, across from 2216 San Gabriel St.

• 26 West, 600 W 26th St, Austin, TX 78705, just south of 2620 Nueces St.

• UT Whitaker Courts Parking Lot, 287 W 51st St, Austin, TX 78751, open July 25–27 only

By placing collection sites near areas with a large student population, organizers hope to make donating nearly as convenient as moving items to a dumpster. The approach also helps keep usable goods circulating within Austin instead of being treated as waste.

“We’re excited to host MoveOutATX again this year to make it easy for students to donate items they no longer need,” Austin Resource Recovery Director Richard McHale said. “This event helps keep usable items out of the landfill while supporting local reuse organizations and community members who can put them to good use.”

Free Furniture Market Offers Items to Austin Residents

Furniture collected through MoveOutATX will be available to the public during the Free Furniture Market at the UT Austin Whitaker Courts Parking Lot, 287 West 51st St., near the tennis courts.

The market will be open from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27.

Items will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and participants must load and transport their own furniture. Anyone picking up an item will also be required to sign a liability waiver.

Each person may take up to two pieces of furniture. Matching sets, including dining tables with chairs, pairs of nightstands or matching chairs, will count as one item.

For Austin residents furnishing a first apartment, replacing a worn-out table or stretching a household budget, the market can provide meaningful help without requiring a complicated application process. It also gives furniture that might otherwise have been discarded a chance to become part of another home.

Because availability will depend on what students donate, organizers cannot guarantee specific items. Residents attending the market should arrive prepared to move furniture safely and bring a vehicle large enough to transport anything they select.

Local Organizations Help Give Donations a Second Life

MoveOutATX works with a network of Austin-area reuse and service organizations that can direct donated goods toward community programs, resale operations and residents in need.

Participating organizations in 2026 include the Austin Area Urban League, Austin Creative Reuse, Eco Spot, JOSCO Products, The SAFE Alliance, Salvation Army Family Stores, UT Outpost and Arms of Hope.

The variety of participating groups allows different kinds of donations to be put to appropriate use. Clothing, art supplies, household goods, food and furniture may each find a new destination through organizations already serving Austin families, students and individuals experiencing financial hardship or major life transitions.

UT Outpost, for example, supports students facing food insecurity and other basic-needs challenges, while The SAFE Alliance serves people affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and exploitation. Other participating organizations focus on creative reuse, affordable household goods and community assistance.

Together, those partnerships make MoveOutATX more than a seasonal cleanup effort. The event connects the university community with the wider Austin community at a moment when large quantities of usable items become available within a short period of time.

Volunteers Needed for the Free Furniture Market

Community volunteers are also needed to help staff the Free Furniture Market.

Volunteers can register for 2.5-hour shifts and will assist with event operations as furniture is organized and distributed. Participants will receive cold water, electrolyte drinks, snacks, cooling towels and discounts from local businesses.

The volunteer opportunity gives residents another way to take part in the program, particularly those who may not have items to donate but still want to support waste reduction and community reuse in Austin.

Why MoveOutATX Matters for Austin

Student move-out season has long created a visible challenge in neighborhoods surrounding the UT campus. Furniture, mattresses, clothing and household goods can accumulate quickly when leases end and students have limited time, transportation or storage options.

MoveOutATX addresses that problem by creating designated places where usable belongings can be donated safely and intentionally. The program helps reduce the amount of material sent to landfills, supports Austin’s reuse economy and gives residents access to items that may otherwise be expensive to replace.

Austin Resource Recovery, the City of Austin department supporting the event, provides recycling, composting, trash, brush and bulk collection services. The department also manages household hazardous waste disposal, street sweeping, public education and other programs intended to move Austin from traditional waste disposal toward more sustainable resource recovery.

That mission is especially visible during MoveOutATX, when a chair, dresser or box of kitchen supplies can quickly shift from being considered unwanted clutter to something useful for a neighbor.

For students, the message is simple: before throwing something away, consider whether another person could use it. For the broader community, the Free Furniture Market offers a chance to see what becomes possible when a routine moving week is treated as an opportunity to share resources.
