Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Shares Helpful Halloween Safety Tips for a Fun Night in Magnolia Springs
As spooky season approaches, families across Magnolia Springs are getting ready for one of the most anticipated nights of the year—Halloween. With decorations up and costumes picked out, the excitement is building. But according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, ensuring a safe and enjoyable night for our children is the top priority.
Whether you're trick-or-treating with little ones, handing out candy at home, or just driving through the neighborhood, here are some essential Halloween safety tips to help everyone have a worry-free night.
Watch the Roads – Drive Extra Safely on Halloween
Halloween is a time of high pedestrian activity, especially after dark. Drivers are urged to use extra caution when traveling through residential neighborhoods.
- Slow down and stay alert. Kids may dart between parked cars or cross streets unexpectedly
- Avoid distractions. Put the phone down—no texting or scrolling while driving.
- Use headlights earlier. This helps increase visibility and ensures young trick-or-treaters can see you coming.
- Enter and exit driveways carefully. Children can be difficult to see, especially in dark costumes.
According to safety experts at Safe Kids Worldwide, children are more than twice as likely to be hit and killed by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
Parents: Keep Your Trick-or-Treaters Visible and Prepared
Parents are encouraged to equip their children with items that help improve visibility.
- Glow sticks, flashlights, and reflective gear are all great options to help drivers spot trick-or-treaters more easily.
- If your child’s costume is dark, consider adding reflective tape or stickers to their outfit or candy bag.
Also, remind your children to walk—don’t run—across streets, and to use sidewalks whenever possible. Look both ways before crossing and stay in groups.

Candy Check: When in Doubt, Throw It Out
After a fun night of trick-or-treating, it’s tempting to dive right into the candy haul. But parents should take a moment to inspect all treats before they’re eaten.
- Throw away any unwrapped candy or homemade treats from unfamiliar sources.
- Avoid fruits or anything that appears to have been tampered with.
Stay Alert and Speak Up
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to keep an eye out for anything that seems off.
“If you see any suspicious behavior or reckless conduct, please call us immediately,” the department said in a statement. Community members can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 936-760-5800.
Trick-or-Treat Timing Reminder
Typical trick-or-treating hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., which is when neighborhoods are busiest with families walking house-to-house.
By following a few simple precautions and looking out for one another, Magnolia Springs can enjoy a safe and memorable Halloween night. Let’s keep the scares where they belong—in haunted houses and spooky stories, not on our streets.
