Mission Bend Library’s Friends Group to Host Back-to-School Book Sale August 16

July 28 2025

The Friends of the Mission Bend Branch Library are giving residents a reason to stock up on affordable reading material while supporting a beloved community resource. The organization will host its Back-to-School Book Sale at Mission Bend Branch Library on Saturday, August 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the library’s Meeting Room, located at 8421 Addicks Clodine Rd, Houston, TX 77083 near Parkway Lakes.

Book lovers, bargain hunters, and anyone looking to exchange spare change for a stack of good reads will find a treasure trove of options. The sale will feature adult and children’s books at prices that are hard to beat, with selections spanning general fiction and nonfiction for children, teens, and adults. Shoppers will discover classics, romance, manga, history, science fiction, and more. Purchases can be made with cash or credit/debit cards for added convenience.

The Friends promise bargains that make it easy to load up on good reads before school starts. Prices start at just $0.50, or shoppers can fill a book bag for $12 or even a box for $25. Payments can be made by cash or credit (no checks).

The Friends group also accepts donations of gently used books year-round. This includes fiction and nonfiction hardback and paperback books for adults, youth, and children, as well as CDs and DVDs. Textbooks published within the past five years are also welcome. However, the library cannot accept cassettes, VHS tapes, encyclopedias, magazines, medical/legal/computer books older than 2020, or books that are damp, moldy, dirty, or insect-infested.

Adding a new twist this year, the Friends group is also launching a Sneaker Recycling Drive during the sale. Residents are encouraged to bring gently used sneakers to help raise funds for the library and keep shoes out of landfills. “Bring them to the August Back-to-School Sale, and we’ll take them off your hands,” volunteers shared, adding that anyone curious about the program can ask for more details at the event.

Proceeds from the book sale and sneaker drive support library programs such as the Children’s Summer Reading Challenge and other cultural events that enrich the Mission Bend community. “The Friends of the Mission Bend Branch Library organization is instrumental in funding library programs such as the children’s Summer Reading Challenge,” library officials shared. Membership applications will be available during the event for anyone interested in joining the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donations are tax-deductible.
