Mayde Creek High School Wins UIL 6A Division I Spirit State Championship
Mayde Creek High School has been named the UIL 6A Division I Spirit State Champion, marking an extraordinary achievement for the school and the entire Katy Independent School District (ISD). In a groundbreaking first, Katy ISD teams claimed the top three spots in this prestigious competition, with Seven Lakes High School securing second place and Jordan High School finishing in third. The competition, held in Fort Worth, TX, this month, saw less than a point separating the cumulative scores of these top three schools.
A total of 75 schools competed in the qualifying round for the 6A Division I Spirit State Championship, with only the top 20 advancing to the final round. Mayde Creek’s victory highlights the district's excellence in cheerleading, a field known for its intense competition in Texas.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment, not only for Mayde Creek High School but also for Katy ISD,” said LaKeisha McGowen, assistant director of fine arts overseeing cheerleading in Katy ISD. “Cheerleading in Texas is very competitive, and it is quite impressive that we have the top three winners in this year’s competition.”

In addition to Mayde Creek’s triumph, Seven Lakes High School and Jordan High School were also recognized for their exceptional performances, making Katy ISD the only district to achieve such a remarkable feat in this competition. Taylor High School earned seventh place, and Cinco Ranch High School secured 10th place, further showcasing the district’s dominance in the UIL Spirit competition.
Teams at the UIL Spirit State Championship compete in three key categories: crowd leading, fight song, and band chant, all of which demonstrate the vital role cheerleaders play in shaping school culture. These categories require a combination of skill, enthusiasm, and precision, and they are integral to creating the spirited environments that fans, athletes, and students experience on game days.
As Katy ISD teams continue to shine on the state level, Mayde Creek and the other top-ranking teams will compete again this weekend in national competitions in both Fort Worth, TX, and Orlando, FL.
