A Legacy of Literacy
Named after Maud Smith Marks (1887-1970), who ran the first small county library in Barker, Texas, the library continues her commitment to literacy and education. Starting in the 1920s, Marks contracted with Harris County to deliver library books, issued library cards, and ensured that children in the area had access to reading materials. The current Maud Marks Library officially opened its doors on July 27, 1993, continuing her mission of fostering a love for reading and learning.

Meet the Manager
Akhila Bhat, the current branch manager, has been with the Harris County Public Library since 2008. With a background as a children’s librarian and assistant branch manager at Barbara Bush Library, Bhat took on her role at Maud Marks Library in 2018. Her passion lies in providing enriching educational opportunities for children and families. In her role, she aims to build lifelong relationships within the community and enhance library resources to meet growing needs. In her spare time, Bhat enjoys traveling and spending quality time with friends and family. Support from the Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Maud Marks Library, originally known as the Friends of Mason Creek Library, has been a dedicated supporter since 1984. Their efforts were instrumental in establishing the full-service library for the growing community. They have continued to support the library by funding services, books, and various programs, including children’s activities, teen programs, and senior bus trips.
