Magnolia ISD Senior Overcomes Cancer, Inspires Community While Earning 2026 KPRC 2 Scholarship

March 19 2026

For families across Magnolia ISD and the Greater Houston area, stories like this one serve as a powerful reminder of what perseverance and community support can accomplish.

Magnolia High School senior Ethan Haugen has been named one of the 2026 KPRC 2American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship recipients, earning a $2,500 award as part of a program recognizing 20 outstanding high school seniors across the region. Each student is nominated by their school, highlighting not just academic achievement, but character, service, and resilience.

For Haugen, that recognition reflects a journey shaped by adversity—and a determination that has resonated far beyond his campus.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis During High School

During his junior year at Magnolia High School, Haugen was diagnosed with stage three osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer that ultimately led to the amputation of his lower leg.

His senior year looked very different from that of many of his classmates. With homebound instruction required, Haugen continued his coursework away from campus—but remained deeply connected to his school and community.

His experience is one that many families understand all too well, as students balance health challenges with education. Yet what sets Haugen apart is how he chose to respond.

Staying Connected Through Service and School Spirit

Even while facing significant physical and emotional challenges, Haugen continued to invest in the Magnolia High School community.

He logged more than 400 volunteer hours running the concession stand in support of the school’s basketball program—a role that kept him engaged with classmates, events, and the spirit of Friday night lights that defines so many Texas communities.

He also remained active in Future Farmers of America (FFA), continuing to participate in one of the state’s most respected student organizations focused on leadership, agriculture, and service.

For many Magnolia ISD families, that level of involvement—especially during hardship—reflects the kind of student leadership that strengthens a school’s identity and pride.

Turning Personal Struggle Into Purpose

Haugen’s journey didn’t stop with overcoming his own diagnosis. Instead, it became the foundation for giving back.

Motivated by his experience as a cancer patient, he partnered with a friend to organize a holiday fundraiser and gift drive benefiting children undergoing treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Their efforts raised approximately $5,000, bringing comfort and support to pediatric cancer patients during the holiday season.

In a region where institutions like MD Anderson serve as a lifeline for families, initiatives like this connect students directly to a broader mission of care and compassion.

Looking Ahead: Engineering a Better Future for Amputees

Haugen’s long-term vision reflects both his personal experience and his desire to create meaningful change.

He plans to attend Texas A&M University to study engineering, with a goal of improving prosthetics to make them more functional and practical for individuals experiencing limb loss.

For many in Magnolia and across Texas, his aspirations highlight an important intersection of education, healthcare innovation, and lived experience—where students don’t just overcome challenges, but work to solve them for others.

What This Recognition Means for the Community

The KPRC 2–American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship program continues to spotlight students who represent the strength and resilience found across local school districts, including Magnolia Independent School District.

For residents, stories like Haugen’s are more than individual achievements—they reflect the values of perseverance, service, and forward-thinking that shape the future of the community.

As graduation season approaches, his journey offers a meaningful reminder of what is possible when determination meets support.

Residents can expect more scholarship announcements in the coming weeks as additional students from across the Houston area are recognized.
