LSC-CyFair Students Earn Top Honors at Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Consortium Academic Symposium

Students at Lone Star College-CyFair are once again putting Cypress on the map academically after two Honors College students earned top recognition at the 2026 Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Consortium (GCIC) Academic Symposium in Texas City.

At a time when communities across northwest Harris County continue investing in education, workforce development, and innovation, the achievements of these students reflect something larger than individual awards. For many families in Cypress, Bridgeland, Towne Lake, Fairfield, and surrounding communities, stories like these reinforce the growing reputation of Lone Star College-CyFair as a launchpad for ambitious students pursuing careers in engineering, healthcare, science, and research.

This year’s symposium, hosted by College of the Mainland, carried the theme “Embodied Knowledge: Decoding & Recoding the Self” and drew more than 140 students from high schools and colleges across the region, making it the largest GCIC symposium to date.

Among the standout presentations were two from LSC-CyFair students whose work explored topics ranging from Soviet science fiction to adolescent behavioral health.

Cypress Student Wins First Place for Research on Soviet Science Fiction

LSC-CyFair student Olivia Brooks earned first place for her presentation titled “Socialist Cosmonauts and Robots: The Influence of Communism in Soviet Children’s Science Fiction Books.”

Brooks, an Honors College Presidential Scholar, began her academic journey at LSC-CyFair as a Dual Credit student and is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. She plans to graduate in December and hopes to become an aerospace engineer.

Her research over the past year has focused on subjects tied to space exploration, physics, rockets, children’s literature, and the universe — a combination that reflects both technical curiosity and creative scholarship.

“At LSC-CyFair, I learned how to conduct research and gained critical thinking and analytical skills that I will use in my future career,” said Brooks. “I’ve enjoyed seeing where my research led me based on my interests.”

For local students considering careers in STEM fields, Brooks’ success highlights the opportunities available through undergraduate research programs close to home.

Honors Student Receives Recognition for Healthcare and Cultural Research

Favour Ogbonna, an LSC Global Scholar who graduated in May, received Honorable Mention for her presentation, “The Role of Culture in Peer-Initiated Sexual Abuse Perpetration Among Adolescents: A Cross-Cultural Analysis.”

Ogbonna will begin the Associate Degree Nursing program at LSC-CyFair this fall and plans to continue her education beyond nursing school with future work in pediatrics and medical research.

Her research focused on the intersection of healthcare, culture, and adolescent behavior — topics that continue gaining attention nationwide as communities seek stronger support systems for children and families.

“I have come to see the gaps in healthcare and the need for more people who are willing to give their time and resources to help bridge these gaps,” Ogbonna said. “And stumbling on research while at LSC-CyFair has helped me to see another way I can make an impact by seeking out answers and solutions to these problems.”

Her work reflects a growing trend among community college students who are combining academic research with practical healthcare goals to address real-world challenges.

LSC-CyFair Honors College Continues Building Academic Momentum

Aurora Lugo, Director of The Honors College at LSC-CyFair, said the students’ achievements reflect both dedication and the growing strength of the college’s research culture.

“I could not be more proud of Olivia and Favour for their presentations at the GCIC Academic Symposium,” Lugo said. “This is their first year in The Honors College at LSC-CyFair, and they have already presented at several undergraduate research conferences.”

Lugo also noted that LSC-CyFair students have continued building momentum at the annual symposium. Last year, LSC-CyFair student Maddy Snow placed third while representing Honors and International Education programs.

For many Cypress-area families, the recognition serves as another reminder that community colleges are increasingly offering students access to meaningful academic experiences, leadership opportunities, and research pathways traditionally associated with four-year universities.
