LSC-CyFair Hosts The Innocents - an Impactful Concert Advocating Social Justice Through Art

September 21 2023

Experience social justice through performance art with Lone Star College-CyFair’s Composer Club and Society for the Arts at a free, unique concert “The Innocents” Sept. 28 with guest percussionists and Professors Dr. John Lane and Allen Otte.

“I’m not sure where you would ever experience music like this live because it’s so unusual, so intense,” said LSC-CyFair Music Professor Dr. Brian Herrington. “While the overarching theme is advocating for the wrongfully convicted through performance art - John and Allen are just incredible musicians and artists.”

In a dramatic, emotional, impactful concert, Dr. Lane and Otte use a variety of found-object and home-made instruments, electronic soundscapes and spoken text to take the audience through aspects of issues surrounding wrongful imprisonment and exoneration.

“The Innocents” concert is a culmination of a two-day residency at LSC-CyFair featuring Dr. Lane, a professor at Sam Houston State University, and Otte, emeritus professor of the University of Cincinnati-Conservatory, in their ground-breaking project advocating for wrongfully convicted inspired by the Innocence Project. “Their two-day residency will bring together performing arts and academic components in a powerful way,” said Dr. Herrington.

In this creative, interdisciplinary collaboration among the college’s music, history, political science and criminal justice departments, LSC-CyFair students, no matter the discipline or type of self-expression, have opportunities to learn about the initiative and how to become involved in advocacy, said Dr. Herrington. They also get to interact with and see top-notch musicians live as well as get to know music faculty at one of the four-year universities where they may transfer, such as SHSU.

Three student events will be held prior to the concert including a masterclass with the guest professors on using creative endeavors for social change, a screening of the documentary about the history of “The Innocents” musical project, and a panel discussion with the guest artists, as well as LSC faculty and students. For more information on the student events, email bherrington@LoneStar.edu.

The 7:30 p.m. concert will be held in the Main Stage Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the LSC-CyFair campus. For information on this concert and other upcoming Center for the Arts events, go to LoneStar.edu/arts-cyfair.
