Local Girl Scout Troop Breathing New Life into Little Library at Rennie Park

Local Girl Scout Troop Breathing New Life into Little Library at Rennie Park

January 10 2024

If you have been to Rennie Park lately, you might have noticed work being done on the the Little Library, which is in the process of receiving a much-needed renovation, thanks to a local Girl Scout troop.

In early December 2023, Blair Francis, troop leader for Girl Scout Troop 129109, reached out to Brittany Severin on the Nottingham Country CIA Board about how her Girl Scouts wanted to help renovate the Little Library at Rennie Park, noting how the structure had deteriorated. Many of the girls in this troop are residents of Nottingham Country, and had personal connections to this Little Library.

“Our Girl Scouts think the Little Library is a great resource for the community and have used it themselves over the years, but it's deteriorated considerably over the last few years,” said Francis.

Co-leaders, Lori and Frank Alexander, noticed the door to the Little Library was completely gone, leaving the structure exposed to the elements and at risk of further damage. With the Board’s approval, the Girl Scouts formed a plan of action and got to work.

The leaders structured the renovation so that the Scouts' involvement would be part of their Bronze Award, which is a service project done by Junior level girls. The Scouts met in early January to complete the woodwork and made plans to meet again in mid-January to install the door, with projected completion targeted for mid-January.

"Part of the project on our troop's side will be a book drive to refill the library. This will happen simultaneously in early January so we are ready for the 'grand re-opening,'" said Francis.

As of this week, the Scouts have a new door built and the girls caulked the library last week. They've also begun collecting book donations. Unfortunately, due to recent rains, the troop has been unable to move forward with the last steps of painting and reattaching the door. Francis is hopeful that they can finish up the project in the next two weeks, weather permitting.

The Nottingham Country CIA is grateful for the generosity and kindness extended by Troop 129109 in their willingness to renovate the Little Library at Rennie Park. Stay tuned for updates on this project!
