Local Boy Scout Pays It Forward to Reach Unlimited

September 21 2023

At Reach Unlimited in Cypress, two portable offices whose exterior common area was once unusable is now a fully functional outdoor meeting space, thanks to a compassionate and thoughtful Boy Scout.

Earlier this month, Anthony Lange, a local Boy Scout whose troop regularly meets at Reach, carried out a plan that was months in the making to transform a patch of grass between the offices with a brand new deck that will function as an additional meeting space and speech therapy setting for Reach clients. In exchange for hosting a room for their meetings, the troop gives back to Reach with small projects like hauling mulch from Reach to the community garden. But the deck project was above and beyond expectations for Kris Lusebrink of Reach Unlimited, who met with Anthony several times to work through all the details like budget and staging supplies.

"We are always looking for more space and the finished deck is a blessing to Reach. I really enjoyed working with Anthony and saw how he gained confidence and skills from completing the deck," said Lusebrink.

As a gesture of gratitude to Reach for providing meeting space for Lange's troop, he set out to make this passion project a reality back in March of this year, rallying support from additional volunteers and supplies donations from local stores to build the deck. Design and construction planning for the deck proved to be a challenge for Lange, but it was a challenge that he was more than willing to accept. Through countless measurements, calculations and rough drafts, Lange wanted to ensure that the deck would be structurally sound and safe for Reach, which provides comprehensive programs and services for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the greater Houston northwest.

With help from members of the community, friend groups, fellow Scouts, adult troop leaders and his parents, Lange and his team of dedicated volunteers finished the deck on September 2 after three solid days of construction. Leveraging the leadership skills that Lange has strengthened over the years as a Scout and in other leadership positions in other organizations, the deck represents all of the hard work that went into the project as a way to give back to Reach and the community.

"I hope that this deck will serve as an example and help encourage other scouts and organizations to give back to the community through projects like these, "said Lange.
