Lamar CISD Approves Teacher Pay Raises, Higher Starting Salaries and Potential Tax Rate Reduction for 2026-27
As Lamar CISD continues to grow alongside the communities it serves, district leaders have approved a budget that aims to invest in both students and the employees who support them every day.
During its June meeting, the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees approved a balanced $572.2 million budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The budget includes increased teacher compensation, pay raises for all district employees, and consideration of lower tax rates for district residents.
For families across Rosenberg, Richmond, Fulshear, Katy and the rapidly expanding areas within Lamar CISD, the decision reflects the district's ongoing effort to keep pace with enrollment growth while maintaining competitive compensation for educators and staff.
Teacher Starting Salary Increases to $68,900
One of the most significant components of the approved budget is a revised teacher pay scale that raises the district's starting teacher salary to $68,900, an increase of $2,200 from the 2025-2026 school year.
District leaders said the move is designed to help Lamar CISD continue attracting and retaining high-quality educators in a competitive employment market.
“Having highly qualified teachers in every Lamar CISD classroom is our number one staffing priority as a district,” Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens said. “Our Board of Trustees understands the value that great teachers bring to the classroom and to students’ lives, and I’m glad that we were able again this year to increase teacher pay across the board and keep our district competitive.”
The increase comes as school districts throughout Texas continue competing for experienced teachers and qualified classroom staff amid ongoing enrollment growth and workforce challenges.
Raises Approved for All District Employees
In addition to the teacher pay increase, the budget includes a 3% raise for all other district employees, calculated using the midpoint of each position's salary range.
Trustees also approved a proposal increasing daily compensation for retired certified teachers who return to the classroom as substitutes by $10 per day.
District officials said the compensation package reflects the district's commitment to supporting employees at every level, from classroom teachers and administrators to transportation, maintenance, nutrition and support staff.
“We work hard to keep the district’s budget balanced and to provide every opportunity for our students while also maintaining Lamar CISD’s ability to attract and retain the best teachers, administrators, and support staff employees possible,” Chief Financial Officer Greg Buchanan said. “We’re incredibly proud of the district’s reputation as an employer of choice for educators across the region, and we strive to offer pay and compensation packages in line with the high value we place on the amazing employees who serve our students.”
Growth Continues Across Lamar CISD
The budget approval comes as Lamar CISD remains one of the fastest-growing school districts in the Houston region.
According to district projections, student enrollment is expected to surpass 50,000 students during the 2026-2027 school year, with additional growth anticipated in future years as residential and commercial development continues throughout Fort Bend County and surrounding areas.
Approximately 85% of the district's budget is dedicated to payroll expenses, supporting expanded staffing needs across new and existing campuses as enrollment climbs.
The district's financial outlook is also supported by continued property value growth, with projected property tax revenue increasing by 4.49%.
Lower School Tax Rates Under Consideration
While approving the budget, trustees also reviewed two proposed tax rate options that could reduce the district's tax rate for homeowners and businesses.
The first option under consideration would set the tax rate at $1.1351 per $100 of assessed valuation, representing a decrease of $0.0118 from the current rate of $1.1469.
The second option would establish a tax rate of $1.1451 per $100 of valuation, a decrease of $0.0018 from the current rate.
The Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the final tax rate in August.
What It Means for Families
For Lamar CISD families, the approved budget represents more than a financial document. It reflects the district's effort to balance rapid growth with investments in classroom instruction, employee retention and long-term financial stability.
As new neighborhoods continue to emerge throughout the district and enrollment reaches new milestones, district leaders say maintaining competitive salaries remains essential to ensuring students have access to qualified educators and strong campus support systems.
With teacher pay increasing, employee raises approved and potential tax relief under consideration, the 2026-2027 budget positions Lamar CISD to continue serving one of the fastest-growing student populations in Texas while preparing for the next chapter of the district's expansion.
Residents can expect additional information regarding the proposed tax rate options ahead of the Board's August vote.
