Kristen Hoyt Appointed Comal County Judge Following Unanimous Vote, Marking New Chapter for New Braunfels Community

March 17 2026

For residents across Comal County and New Braunfels, leadership at the county level plays a direct role in shaping growth, infrastructure, and daily quality of life. This week, that leadership took a meaningful step forward as Kristen Hoyt was officially appointed Comal County Judge, filling a vacancy that has weighed heavily on the community.

Hoyt’s appointment, approved unanimously by the Comal County Commissioners Court, takes effect immediately following her swearing-in by District Judge Gary Steel. The decision comes after the passing of longtime Comal County Judge Sherman Krause, whose leadership left a lasting imprint on the county’s identity, governance, and growth.

For many residents, the moment represents both continuity and transition—honoring a respected legacy while looking ahead to the future of one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas.

A Leadership Transition Rooted in Community Trust

Hoyt is not a new name to Comal County residents. She currently serves as the Comal County Tax Assessor-Collector and was also the Republican primary winner in the March 3, 2026 election. With no Democratic opponent on the ballot, her appointment provides immediate stability in county leadership ahead of the November election.

Her selection by Commissioners Court reflects both institutional confidence and community familiarity—key factors in a county navigating rapid population growth, development pressures, and long-term planning needs.

In a statement following her appointment, Hoyt emphasized her commitment to continuity and service.

“I am committed to honoring Judge Krause’s legacy by serving with the same humility and care he showed,” Hoyt said. “I also look forward to working alongside the members of Commissioners Court as we continue serving the people of Comal County and planning for our county’s future.”

Honoring the Legacy of Judge Sherman Krause

The appointment comes at a time when many across Comal County are still reflecting on the loss of Judge Sherman Krause, who served the community with dedication for many years.

Krause was widely known for his steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and deep connection to the people he served. His passing created not only a vacancy in office, but a moment of collective pause for Commissioners Court, county staff, and residents alike.

Hoyt’s acknowledgment of Krause’s legacy signals an intention to carry forward the values that defined his tenure—an approach that resonates with a community that values both growth and grounded leadership.

From Small Business Owner to County Judge

Beyond her role in county government, Hoyt’s path to leadership has been closely tied to the New Braunfels community.

After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in education, she began her career in Nashville working in the entertainment industry before relocating to New Braunfels in 2012 with her husband, Matthew Hoyt. Together, they own and operate Corner Tubes, a local business familiar to many residents and visitors along the Comal River.

Her involvement in community organizations has been extensive, including work with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Downtown Advisory Board, and the New Braunfels Jaycees. Her leadership and service earned her recognition as a Top Five Outstanding Young Texan and a Pillar of the Community in 2018.

Hoyt has also invested in local leadership development through programs such as Leadership New Braunfels, City University, and the Citizens Sheriff’s Academy—experiences that have helped shape her understanding of local government, public safety, and community priorities.

She remains active in organizations including NB Women Go and the Canyon Lake Noon Lions, reinforcing her continued connection to residents across the county.

What This Means for Comal County Residents

For homeowners, families, and businesses in Comal County, the role of County Judge extends far beyond the courtroom. The position serves as the presiding officer of Commissioners Court, influencing decisions on infrastructure, budgeting, emergency management, and long-term planning.

As Comal County continues to experience rapid growth along corridors like Highway 281 and I-35, leadership decisions will directly impact:

  • Road expansions and traffic management
  • Property values and development patterns
  • Public safety and emergency response
  • County services and tax allocation

Hoyt’s appointment provides continuity at a time when steady leadership is critical to managing that growth responsibly.

A Personal Commitment to Service

Outside of her professional roles, Hoyt is a mother of two, raising Andrew and Davis with her husband in New Braunfels. Her connection to the community extends into everyday life—whether through local organizations, small business ownership, or time spent along the river with family and friends.

That personal investment in the community often shapes how local leaders approach public service—grounding policy decisions in lived experience.

What Happens Next

With her appointment now in effect, Hoyt will continue serving as Comal County Judge through the upcoming November 2026 election, where she currently runs unopposed.

In the months ahead, residents can expect continued focus on managing growth, maintaining infrastructure, and preserving the character of Comal County—priorities that remain central to both longtime residents and those new to the area.

As the county moves forward, this transition represents more than a change in leadership. It reflects a community continuing to evolve while holding onto the values that define it.
