Katy ISD Wrestlers Emily Beltran and Stephanie Lopez Win UIL State Championships, Making History for Katy and Mayde Creek High Schools

March 05 2026

Two Katy ISD student-athletes have etched their names into Texas high school wrestling history, bringing home UIL state championships and setting new standards for girls wrestling in the Katy community.

Katy High School’s Emily Beltran and Mayde Creek High School’s Stephanie Lopez delivered dominant performances at the UIL Girls State Wrestling Championships, marking a milestone season for Katy ISD athletics and reinforcing the district’s growing presence in one of the fastest-rising sports in Texas.

For families, students and coaches across Katy, the victories represent more than medals. They reflect years of perseverance, discipline and community support — and signal the continued rise of girls wrestling programs across the region.

Emily Beltran Closes Historic Katy High School Career With Second State Title

For Emily Beltran, the journey to becoming the most accomplished female wrestler in Katy High School history began with a setback.

As a sophomore, Beltran qualified for the UIL state tournament but exited the competition with an 0–2 record. Rather than allowing the disappointment to define her, she used it as motivation.

Beltran recommitted herself to refining every aspect of her performance — sharpening her technique, elevating her conditioning and maintaining an unwavering focus during the offseason.

The results were nothing short of remarkable.

Competing in the 105-pound weight class, Beltran captured her second consecutive UIL state championship to close out her high school career. Since that sophomore appearance at state, she compiled an extraordinary 97–0 record.

She graduates from Katy High School with a career record of 176–28, including 125 victories by pin, making her the winningest female wrestler in the program’s history.

Beltran plans to continue wrestling at the collegiate level while pursuing her long-term goal of becoming a pediatrician.

Her journey from early setback to dominant champion has become an example for younger athletes across Katy ISD’s wrestling programs.

Stephanie Lopez Breaks Through With Championship Season at Mayde Creek High School

At Mayde Creek High School, Stephanie Lopez carved her own inspiring path to a UIL state title.

Competing in the 115-pound weight class, Lopez finished the season with a 46–6 record and now holds a career record of 112–38. Her championship run came after years of steady progress through the state tournament ranks.

As a freshman, Lopez qualified for the UIL state wrestling tournament as an alternate.

As a sophomore, she placed sixth.

By her junior season, she had developed into one of the most formidable competitors in Texas girls wrestling.

Her breakthrough moment came in the state championship run when she defeated a longtime rival she had previously faced seven times — and lost to each time.

Beyond the state title, Lopez also captured the championship at the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD wrestling tournament, a major event featuring approximately 100 teams, further highlighting her ability to compete against some of the top wrestlers in the region.

Her performance also earned her recognition as Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2026 Spartan Hall of Fame event.

Throughout the season, Lopez led Mayde Creek in wins, pins and team points, and she is currently on pace to set school records for career wins and career team points.

Her success reflects not only athletic ability but also an intense commitment to academics. Lopez balances high-level competition with a rigorous academic schedule that includes Advanced Placement courses such as Pre-Calculus and Business Law.

Katy ISD Athletics Celebrates Two Champions

District leaders say the achievements of both wrestlers reflect the culture of discipline and resilience developing across Katy ISD athletics.

“Emily and Stephanie represent the very best of Katy ISD athletics,” Executive Director of Athletics Lance Carter said. “Their discipline, resilience and commitment to excellence define what it means to compete at the highest level. Winning a state championship is extraordinary, but the character they’ve shown along the way makes us even more proud.”

Their victories mark a significant moment for girls wrestling in Katy ISD, where participation and competitive success have continued to grow in recent years.

What This Means for Girls Wrestling in Katy ISD

The success of Beltran and Lopez highlights a broader trend across Texas high school athletics: the rapid rise of girls wrestling.

Programs across Katy ISD have expanded in both participation and competitive strength, with athletes now consistently qualifying for regional and state competitions.

For younger wrestlers watching from the stands or practicing in district gyms, the accomplishments of Beltran and Lopez provide a clear message — perseverance, growth and daily commitment can turn early challenges into championship moments.

As both programs look toward the future, their achievements have already helped raise expectations for what Katy ISD wrestling can accomplish in the years ahead.

And for the Katy community, these state titles represent something larger than trophies: they tell the story of two athletes who turned determination into history.
