Katy ISD Students Transform Harris County Precinct 4 Bus with Art Celebrating Community and Diversity
This morning at Garland McMeans Junior High School, Commissioner Lesley Briones unveiled a surprise for the third group of five winners in the Harris County Precinct 4 bus design contest: their very own artwork, now adorning a bus that serves their community.
The contest, an initiative spearheaded by Commissioner Briones, called upon young creatives from seven school districts across the county to decorate the buses that make up the Precinct 4 fleet. The fleet is a vital part of the county's services, providing free day trips for residents aged 50 and older, perfect for everything from educational activities to recreational outings.

The winning students from Garland McMeans Junior High School had the thrill of seeing their artwork, each piece reflecting unique cultural perspectives and experiences from their community, featured on one of these buses for the first time.
Contest participation was open to students from Alief ISD, Cypress Fairbanks ISD, Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Waller ISD, and Tomball ISD. The theme for the artwork was “The History of and Unity in Harris County," encouraging the students to reflect upon the diversity of cultures, historical landmarks, natural features, and the changemakers of the county.
The bus design contest, together with the Precinct 4 bus program, is Commissioner Briones' way of promoting both artistic expression and community connectivity. With her efforts, the journeys on these buses are not only about the destination, but also about celebrating the talents and uniqueness of Harris County along the way.
As these buses travel throughout the community, they will serve as a reminder of the importance of art, culture, and collaboration in shaping a vibrant future for Harris County.
