Katy ISD Launches Free Summer Meals Program to Fight Childhood Hunger Starting May 27
As summer begins, Katy ISD is once again opening its cafeterias to ensure that no child goes hungry while school is out. Starting May 27, the district will offer free breakfasts and lunches through its annual Summer Food Service Program, available to all children aged 18 and under, regardless of income or school enrollment.
No Applications, No ID Required
Administered statewide by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program removes all barriers to access: no registration, income verification, or identification is needed. Children must simply show up—meals are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and must be eaten on-site in the school cafeteria.
“Our Summer Food Service is always popular with the community, and it is our pleasure to provide this service to families,” said Donna Pittenger, Executive Director of Nutrition and Food Services at Katy ISD.
Where and When to Find Meals
Meal service begins May 27 at the Opportunity Awareness Center and expands to additional campuses starting May 29. Three high schools—Paetow, Mayde Creek, and Morton Ranch—will offer lunch only. Parents are also welcome to purchase a meal and eat alongside their children.
The schedule runs through July 31, with no service from June 30 to July 4 at several campuses due to the Independence Day holiday. The full list of locations, dates, and times is available below for easy reference.

The Larger Fight Against Food Insecurity
Katy ISD’s efforts are part of a broader campaign to combat childhood hunger and food insecurity, which remain significant challenges across Texas. According to Feeding Texas, approximately 1 in 5 Texas children—nearly 1.4 million—live in food-insecure households. In the Katy area specifically, nearly 24% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch during the 2023–2024 school year, according to data from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), highlighting the importance of Katy ISD’s summer meal program in meeting ongoing community needs.
The USDA’s Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option—both administered by TDA—target low-income communities to ensure children continue receiving nutritious meals even when school is not in session.
