Katy ISD Game Changers: Taylor High School Captain Nicholas Sauls Leads Mustangs Soccer with Leadership, Faith and ‘Sage Mode’ Mindset

March 06 2026

In a program known for developing strong athletes, Taylor High School senior Nicholas Sauls has become something more — a steady presence whose leadership has helped shape the culture of the Mustangs soccer team.

The Taylor High School captain, who anchors the team’s defense as a center back, is recognized across Katy ISD not only for his athletic ability but also for the way he invests in the people around him. As the Mustangs continue their season, Sauls’ influence reaches far beyond the pitch, reminding teammates that success in sports often begins with trust, respect and shared purpose.

For families and students following Katy ISD athletics, Sauls’ story reflects the kind of leadership that defines many of the district’s standout student-athletes: strong performance paired with humility, academic commitment and a focus on community.

From Backyard Games to Katy ISD Soccer Leadership

Sauls’ journey into soccer didn’t begin with a lifelong dream of the sport. After moving to Texas as a child, he spent much of his early years playing baseball. It was a neighbor who first introduced him to soccer, inviting him to play goalkeeper in the backyard and encouraging him to join a local club team.

That casual introduction quickly turned into a lasting passion.

Since second grade, Sauls has played both club and school soccer, drawn to the sport’s simplicity and accessibility.

“All you need is a ball and some shoes,” Sauls said. “You can play with anyone, anywhere. It’s just fun.”

Over the years, that love for the game grew into a deeper commitment to teamwork and leadership — qualities that would eventually earn him the role of captain at Taylor High School.

Building Team Chemistry Beyond the Field

For Sauls, leadership is less about titles and more about relationships.

“I’ve always believed the most important thing is the relationships you build,” Sauls said. “I want younger players to remember that we’re a team and to treat each other with respect and encouragement.”

To strengthen those connections, Sauls helped organize team dinners, small gatherings and weekly Bible studies, personally inviting teammates to participate. The goal was simple: build trust off the field so the team could communicate better on it.

That investment has paid off throughout the season.

“Our chemistry off the field makes a huge difference on the field,” Sauls said. “When you trust each other as people, it’s easier to communicate and stay positive during tough moments in games.”

A Captain Who Leads in Difficult Moments

One of those challenging moments came during a tense matchup against Katy High School, a rivalry game that tested the Mustangs’ composure.

After the team trailed at halftime, Sauls noticed a teammate sitting alone on the bench following a yellow card. Rather than focusing solely on tactics, he chose encouragement.

“I went up to him and told him to focus on what comes next,” Sauls said. “I knew he’d get another opportunity, and when he went back in, he got the assist that helped us win the game.”

Moments like that are what stand out to Taylor High School head soccer coach Robert Destefano.

“He’s an incredible kid,” Destefano said. “You expect a senior leader to talk about wins and records, but Nicholas talks about relationships and treating teammates the right way. That’s powerful, and it says everything about his character.”

Leading by Example at Taylor High School

Destefano said Sauls began earning the trust of coaches and teammates early in his high school career.

As a young defender stepping into varsity competition, he quickly proved dependable — eventually becoming the backbone of the Mustangs’ defensive unit.

Now in his senior season, Sauls continues to lead through quiet consistency.

“He’s the first one out on the field and the last one helping clean up equipment,” Destefano said. “He doesn’t act entitled because he’s a senior. He leads by example, and the younger players see that.”

Preparing for the Next Chapter

While balancing varsity soccer and leadership responsibilities, Sauls has also managed the academic rigor of Taylor High School, taking advanced courses as he prepares for college.

He plans to study engineering with a long-term goal of entering the aerospace industry and has committed to continue his soccer career at Methodist University in North Carolina.

Sauls credits much of his work ethic to his family, particularly his father.

“My dad has a strong work ethic and always finds the best way to solve problems,” Sauls said. “That’s something I’ve tried to apply in school, in soccer and in life.”

A Lasting Legacy in Katy ISD Athletics

As graduation approaches, Sauls hopes the culture of encouragement and accountability he helped cultivate within the Taylor Mustangs soccer program will continue with the next generation of players.

“I want to leave behind a team that supports each other and stays positive,” Sauls said. “If the younger players carry that forward, then I know I’ve made an impact.”

For Coach Destefano, that impact is already visible.

“His legacy will be the example he set for what it means to be a leader,” Destefano said. “Nicholas Sauls showed this team how to work, how to care for each other and how to represent Taylor soccer the right way.”

As Katy ISD communities continue to celebrate student-athletes who embody both excellence and character, Sauls’ story stands as a reminder that leadership often begins with something simple: lifting up the people around you.
