Katy ISD Announces Proposed Names for New Elementary Schools, Shares Projected Growth Insights

November 19 2024

At a Board Work Study meeting on November 18, Katy ISD Trustees reviewed the proposed names for the district’s new elementary schools #47 and #48, as recommended by separate naming advisory committees. These names will now be subject to public input before final approval.

Elementary #47, located at 7402 Katy Hockley Cut Off Road in the Elyson area, is recommended to be named after Alfred and Ann Boudny, two long-serving educators in the district. Alfred Boudny's career in education spanned 39 years, with 34 of those years spent in Katy ISD, including roles at West Memorial Elementary, Nottingham Country Elementary, Memorial Parkway Junior High, and McDonald Junior High. He retired in 2000 as Teacher of the Year, and after retirement, continued his commitment to education by tutoring, mentoring, and volunteering at several Katy ISD schools. Ann Boudny joined Katy ISD in 1982, where she served as department chair for 30 years at Memorial Parkway Junior High until her retirement in 2015.

Elementary #48, located at 900 Sunterra Shores in the Sunterra development, is recommended to be named after James and Mitzi Cross, both of whom have had distinguished careers in education. James Cross began his teaching career in Levelland, Texas, before moving to Katy ISD’s Beck Junior High, where he served as assistant principal and later principal. He became principal of Cinco Ranch High School in 2009 and retired in 2022 after a long tenure in the district. Mitzi Cross also spent much of her career in education, including teaching and later serving as a librarian in several Katy ISD schools, ultimately retiring after 40 years of service.

Both schools, located in Katy ISD’s northwest quadrant, are scheduled to open in the fall of 2025. Elementary #47 will relieve Youngblood Elementary, while Elementary #48 will serve the areas currently served by Faldyn and Robertson elementary schools.

Community members are invited to provide their input at Public Forums to be held on Wednesday, December 4, at the Katy ISD Education Support Complex (6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy, TX 77494). The forum for Elementary #47 will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the forum for Elementary #48 at 6 p.m. After gathering community feedback, the naming advisory committees will review the input and, if necessary, adjust their recommendations before presenting them to the Trustees for final approval.

Additionally, during the meeting, the district's demographic partner, Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented a 2024 update projecting steady growth, particularly in the northwest quadrant. The report forecasts an average annual increase of 1,017 students over the next five years, with Katy ISD's student population expected to exceed 101,000 by 2029. This growth is attributed to large housing developments, including 44,239 new housing units, with more families expected to enroll in Katy ISD schools. The district is planning future facilities to accommodate this increase and ensure a safe, supportive learning environment for all students.
