A teddy bear may seem like a small thing, but for a child sitting inside an ambulance after an accident, illness or other emergency, something soft and familiar can offer a little reassurance when almost everything else feels unfamiliar.

That is the idea behind Katy Area CERT’s Comfy Pals Program, a community donation effort that provides specially selected stuffed animals to Harris County Emergency Services District No. 48 EMS crews. For families in Katy Communicator, which is served by HCESD 48, it is also an easy way to support local first responders and the children they may encounter on some of their most difficult calls.

The donated stuffed animals are vacuum-sealed before being provided to EMS crews, according to information shared by Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department. First responders can then give the toys to children who may be frightened, overwhelmed or simply in need of something comforting during an emergency.

How Katy Communicator Residents Can Help

Katy Area CERT is currently seeking new and unused stuffed animals for the Comfy Pals Program.

Because the toys are intended for use with children during emergency medical calls, donations must meet specific requirements. Stuffed animals should have embroidered eyes, noses and mouths rather than buttons or other attached pieces. They should also be free of bows, buttons and other small attachments and must be suitable for vacuum sealing.
