Join Harris County Constable Precinct 5 at Walk Like MADD to Combat Drunk Driving and Support Victims
'Walk Like MADD', a national fundraising event by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), is gaining momentum ahead of race day, set for Saturday, September 24th. Harris County Constable Precinct 5 will once again participate in this annual initiative, and Constable Ted Heap is encouraging the community to get involved. .
'Walk Like MADD' serves as MADD's signature fundraising event, raising both funds and awareness towards the elimination of alcohol and drug-impaired driving. The 2024 Southeast Texas event, taking place at Champion Forest Baptist Church in Jersey Village, aims to raise a total of $120,000, with Precinct 5 striving to raise $1,000 towards that goal.
MADD was established in 1980 by Candace Lightner, a California mother grieving the loss of her 13-year-old daughter, Cari, due to drunk driving. Today, MADD continues its mission to end drunk driving, fight drugged driving, and support victims of these violent crimes across the country. In addition, the nonprofit organization actively strives to prevent underage drinking.
MADD's work has resulted in significant progress over the years. Over 370,000 lives have been saved, drunk driving deaths have decreased by more than 50 percent, and more than 840,000 victims have received passionate assistance. MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving® advocates for law enforcement support, ignition interlocks for all offenders, and advanced vehicle technology.
The Walk Like MADD event, which also includes a 5K Dash in some locations, raised over $3 million in the previous year, enabling MADD to continue providing its programs and services at no cost. Engagement in these events furthers MADD’s lifesaving mission and contributes to safer families and communities.
The 'Walk Like MADD' event goes beyond raising funds. It also serves as a platform for victims and their families to share their experiences and fuel the mission against drunk driving. Take Erin Rollins, for example, a survivor who suffered severe injuries due to a drunk driver. Rollins, now a MADD National Ambassador, participates in 'Walk Like MADD' every year, using her life-altering experience to raise awareness about the devastation that drunk driving can bring.
