How Lytle Animal Care and Control Supports Pet Adoption, Fostering, and Lost Animal Recovery
In Lytle, pets are part of the family—and when animals need help, the City of Lytle Animal Care and Control is often the first call residents make.
Located at 17971 W Farm to Market 2790 S, Lytle, TX 78052, the facility has served the community since opening on January 30, 2010. Its mission is to protect public health and safety while promoting the humane treatment of animals across Lytle. From sheltering stray dogs and cats to enforcing city ordinances and educating residents, the department plays a key role in maintaining both neighborhood safety and animal welfare.
By reducing stray populations, preventing the spread of disease, and encouraging responsible pet ownership, Animal Care and Control helps preserve the quality of life Lytle residents value.
Fostering Dogs Awaiting Transport
The shelter is currently seeking short-term foster families for several dogs and puppies that have already been adopted and are waiting for transport to homes on the East Coast. Most fosters are needed for two to three weeks.
The facility provides food and medical care. Foster families provide a safe home environment that helps dogs adjust to life outside a kennel—an important step before entering their permanent homes.
Foster requirements include:
- Age 21 or older
- Secure fenced yard (no barbed wire)
- Home/yard check by staff
- Completion of a foster agreement
Those interested should contact Santiago Morantez, Director, at 830-709-3832. The shelter is currently over capacity, and community support is urgently needed.
Adopting a Pet in Lytle
The goal of the City of Lytle Animal Care and Control is to find forever homes for adoptable animals. Adoption is a significant commitment, and residents are encouraged to carefully consider the responsibility involved.
Basic adoption requirements include:
- Secure fenced yard
- Reasonable shelter for outdoor animals
- No chaining or tying out
Since March 1, 2013, all adopted animals must be spayed or neutered. Adoption packages for dogs and cats include vaccinations and age-appropriate medical testing. The city covers 25% of the mandatory spay/neuter cost.
For adoption information, call 830-709-3832.

Surrender Policies and Important Considerations
The City of Lytle Animal Care and Control is not a no-kill shelter. Animals not adopted or fostered may be euthanized, depending on space and staff discretion.
Residents considering surrendering a pet should call 830-709-3832 before making a decision, as staff may be able to suggest alternatives.
For residents within Lytle city limits:
- A $100 surrender fee per animal is required (paid at City Office)
- Surrenders are not accepted after 5 p.m., on weekends, or on city holidays
- Acceptance depends on available space
