The new exhibit comprises three spacious aviaries, each meticulously crafted to mimic different global ecosystems. The first, representing the African Savanna, showcases the majestic grey crowned cranes and highlights the Zoo's conservation partnership aimed at protecting these endangered birds. The second, depicting North American Woodlands, is home to numerous American songbirds with an aim to raise awareness about the wild bird trade. The third aviary replicates South American Wetlands, immersing guests among diverse South American birds, including Chilean flamingos.
In addition to these captivating displays, the exhibit boasts a state-of-the-art Avian Conservation Environment (ACE) building. This modern facility provides upgraded spaces for the Zoo's bird care professionals, while also hosting breeding programs for endangered species. The ACE building has been awarded LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, a rare achievement for zoo exhibits, highlighting its sustainable design and operations.
Situated along a major migratory flyway, Houston Zoo plays a significant role in the wellbeing of billions of birds each year. The "Birds of the World" exhibit, together with additional initiatives such as applying bird-safe window films and reducing light pollution during migration seasons, underscore the Zoo's dedication to protecting avian populations, both locally and globally.
The Houston Zoo invites the community to celebrate the opening of this pioneering exhibit. Interactive workshops, encounters with bird care professionals, and opportunities for visitors to contribute to bird conservation efforts in their own backyards are all part of the Houston Zoo's commitment to fostering a love for wildlife and nurturing a more sustainable world.
