The strike team includes personnel from the Houston, Baytown, Conroe, Needham, North Montgomery County, and Porter fire departments. They are joining more than 135 firefighters, emergency management personnel, and medical staff deployed from Texas, along with over 45 fire engines, ambulances, and other equipment. The group has now arrived in Los Angeles, stopping near El Paso for rest on Sunday before resuming their journey.
The deployed firefighters are expected to remain in California for 14 days, though their stay may be extended to 21 days if necessary.

Wildfire Devastation in California
Since January 7, 2025, the wildfires in California, particularly in the Los Angeles area, have caused immense destruction and loss. According to CAL FIRE, the current wildfire season has seen:
- 124 wildfires
- 40,588 acres burned
- 19 fatalities (pending confirmation by the coroner)
- 12,300+ structures destroyed, with damage assessments ongoing for the Palisades and Eaton fires
Governor Greg Abbott expressed Texas’ commitment to assisting California during this crisis. “Our hearts grieve with the entire Los Angeles community as they continue to respond to these destructive wildfires,” Abbott said. “Texans know all too well the devastation wildfires can cause... our country is stronger when we come together in times of crisis.”
Governor Abbott has firsthand experience with the devastating effects of fire, having lost his family home to a blaze when he was in sixth grade. "I still vividly remember pulling into the driveway and seeing nothing left but the chimney. It's a feeling that stays with you forever, which is why I know how important firefighters and the community are during these challenging times," he shared. "To all —please know you're not alone. Houston stands with you, and we'll continue to do what we can to help."
The Role of Texas Firefighters
The deployment of Texas firefighters, coordinated by the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), Texas A&M Forest Service, and Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System, underscores the importance of interstate collaboration in disaster response. Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz of the Houston Fire Department praised the effort, saying, “Partnerships like this are key to the success of a world-class fire department. We are showing up for our brothers and sisters during their time of need the same way they have for us.”
Muñoz emphasized the bravery and dedication of the deployed personnel, adding, “Please keep the men and women close to your hearts as they bravely face this disaster, and continue to pray for those impacted in the Los Angeles area.”

Why Mutual Aid Matters
The EMAC framework enables states to share resources and personnel during emergencies, ensuring timely and effective responses to disasters. Through this system, Texas firefighters are stepping in to provide much-needed support to California, a state grappling with widespread wildfires exacerbated by prolonged drought and high winds.
How You Can Support
Community members are encouraged to keep the deployed firefighters and the affected Californians in their thoughts during this challenging time. Donations to wildfire relief organizations and local disaster response efforts can make a tangible difference.
The California Fire Foundation is collaborating with local fire agencies and community organizations to provide direct financial assistance to affected residents. The Foundation also supports surviving families of fallen firefighters and communities impacted by natural disasters. To aid wildfire victims, tax-deductible donations can be made to the CFF Wildfire & Disaster Relief Fund here.
Additionally, the California Community Foundation (CCF) supports recovery through its Wildfire Recovery Fund. Since 2003, the fund has provided over $32 million for housing, mental health care, and infrastructure rebuilding, helping communities transform pain into resilience. Learn more or donate here.
The American Red Cross is on the ground providing critical relief to communities affected by wildfires, including shelter, meals, and emergency supplies. Their efforts extend to offering emotional support and assistance with recovery planning for displaced families. Donations to the Red Cross help fund this vital work, ensuring affected individuals receive the care they need during and after disasters. Learn more or contribute here.
