Houston-Area Chick-fil-A Restaurants Surpass 900K Meals Donated to Community, Celebrate with $90K Donation to Local Nonprofits

September 18 2024

In a display of local unity, Chick-fil-A restaurants across Houston have joined forces to tackle the growing issue of food insecurity in the area, surpassing the donation of over 900,000 meals to the local community. In celebration of this feat, participating Houston-area Chick-fil-A restaurants and the Astros Foundation presented a donation of $90,000 to nine local nonprofits.

The local charities that were honored at the Chick-fil-A Day at the Houston Astros game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 6 included Covenant House Texas, Harmony House, West Houston Assistance Ministries, Hope Center Houston, Humble Area Assistance Ministries, Cypress Assistance Ministries, The Crisis Center, Youth-Reach Houston, and Project Hope. Each organization was presented with a $10,000 grant before the start of the game to bolster their community efforts.

The chosen nonprofits have previously partnered with Chick-fil-A's Shared Table program, an initiative that redirects surplus food from restaurants to nonprofits, soup kitchens, and food banks. This cooperative effort has given rise to more than 961,200 meals through Chick-fil-A Shared Table donations, thanks to the commitment of 85 Chick-fil-A restaurants in the Houston area.

James DeCola, Owner-Operator of Chick-fil-A Parkway Village, expressed the deep-seated dedication of the popular restaurant chain to the cause. "We are honored to partner with the Astros Foundation and these incredible local organizations to fight hunger in the Houston community. We are committed to caring for our neighbors in need and are thrilled to celebrate the real impact these nonprofits are making in Houston."

The robust efforts against food insecurity extend beyond meal donations, as highlighted by local Chick-fil-A restaurants' partnerships with the Astros Foundation through various campaigns. Both Bases Loaded, which donates 2,000 meals every time the bases are loaded at an Astros game, and Baking a Difference, an annual cookie fundraiser, are additional programs contributing to the food security cause.

The restaurants' initiatives also extend to the local community's involvement with volunteer efforts. Summer Service Days, for instance, have encouraged community members to pack and sort meals at the Houston Food Bank. Since 2021, with the community's support and collaboration with the Astros Foundation, participating Houston-area Chick-fil-A restaurants have donated over 3 million meals in the fight against hunger.
