Harris County Sheriff's Office Launches 'Take Me Home' Program to Support Residents with Cognitive Conditions

November 12 2024

In honor of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has introduced a new initiative aimed at improving the safety of elderly residents with cognitive conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The "Take Me Home" program is designed to help law enforcement officers respond with greater empathy and understanding when interacting with individuals who may be vulnerable or at risk due to cognitive impairment.

The program, which is completely voluntary and free to participate in, offers families the opportunity to provide vital information that can assist deputies during encounters. This includes details such as the individual’s name, date of birth, recent photographs, and any specific de-escalation techniques or preferences for interaction that might help ensure a safe and positive experience.

“Harris County is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our residents, especially those who may be more vulnerable due to cognitive conditions,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “The Take Me Home program is an invaluable resource that will help our deputies provide the highest level of care and attention, ensuring safe and positive interactions.”

Families who choose to participate in the program can provide additional helpful information, including known wandering locations, personal habits, and any other details that would assist in a more compassionate response. All of this information is linked to a specific address, allowing deputies to respond quickly and effectively to incidents involving individuals with cognitive conditions. The more detailed the information, the better equipped law enforcement will be to ensure the person’s safety.

How the Program Works

The Take Me Home program is designed to make interactions between law enforcement and individuals with cognitive impairments safer for everyone involved. When someone with a cognitive condition is found in a situation where they may be confused or lost, the program allows deputies to access the information provided by their families, enabling them to offer a more tailored and caring response.

The program is voluntary, and families can opt-out at any time. By participating, families can have peace of mind, knowing that in the event their loved one encounters law enforcement, the deputies will have immediate access to critical information that may help avoid confusion or distress.

A Commitment to Compassionate Care

The introduction of the Take Me Home program highlights the Harris County Sheriff's Office’s ongoing commitment to creating a safer and more compassionate community. By providing this resource, the department aims to foster more understanding and empathetic interactions between deputies and residents who may be dealing with cognitive conditions, especially those who may wander or become disoriented.

Sheriff Gonzalez emphasized that the program’s goal is not only to ensure the safety of those with cognitive impairments but also to empower families with the peace of mind that their loved ones will be treated with care and respect. "This program is designed to provide the necessary support to our deputies so they can offer the most effective care," he said. "It's about building trust and ensuring that everyone in our community feels safe and supported."
