Harris County Sheriff's Office K9 Trex Wins K9s4Cops Fast Dog Competition at Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

March 10 2025

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) celebrated a major victory as K9 Trex clinched the top prize at the K9s4Cops Fast Dog Competition at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. The event, held at the NRG Center’s Main Arena, showcased the speed and strength of elite public safety K9s in an adrenaline-fueled contest of skill and determination.

The annual K9s4Cops Hard Dog/Fast Dog Competition brought together 12 of the region’s most highly trained law enforcement K9s and their handlers. The competition, now in its 10th year, tested the agility and power of these specially trained police dogs as they competed for the fastest hit speed and hardest hit.

HCSO K9 Unit Demonstrates Excellence

The HCSO K9 unit is more than just a law enforcement tool—it is a lifeline in critical situations. These highly trained dogs help deputies track down dangerous suspects, locate missing individuals, and detect illegal narcotics or hazardous materials. Their presence adds an extra layer of security and efficiency to police work, making communities safer every day.

K9 Trex’s performance at the Fast Dog Competition was a reflection of the dedication and rigorous training that goes into every K9-handler partnership. The event was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of the extraordinary bond between officers and their canine counterparts, showcasing the strength, intelligence, and relentless drive these K9s bring to the field. Moments like these highlight not only their skill but also the critical role they play in protecting both their handlers and the public.

A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

K9s4Cops' origins trace back to a story of tragedy and heroism. On December 22, 2009, Deputy Ted Dahlin’s K9 partner, Blek, was killed in the line of duty while pursuing burglary suspects, ultimately saving Dahlin’s life. In response to this sacrifice, Houston philanthropist Kristi Schiller founded K9s4Cops in 2010 to ensure law enforcement agencies have access to highly trained K9s, which can cost up to $45,000 per dog.

Since its inception, K9s4Cops has placed more than 300 K9s in law enforcement agencies across the country, contributing to the seizure of over a billion dollars’ worth of contraband and enhancing public safety nationwide.

Looking Ahead

With this latest win, K9 Trex and the HCSO K9 unit continue to demonstrate the power and effectiveness of police K9 teams. Their participation in the Fast Dog Competition not only highlights their skill but also represents the importance of K9 units in ensuring public safety.

As K9s4Cops continues its mission of supporting law enforcement agencies, the legacy of K9 heroes like Blek, Trex, and their handlers remains strong, protecting communities for generations to come. To learn more about K9s4Cops and ways to support their mission, visit k9s.org
