Harris County Precinct 4 Seeks Resident Input for 'Healthy Parks' Initiative

November 11 2024

Harris County Precinct 4 is asking residents to share their opinions in a new survey as part of its “Healthy Parks” initiative, a major project aimed at improving local parks and trails. The initiative is part of a broader effort to make parks more accessible and valuable for the community by addressing the needs of the area's 55 parks, greenspaces, and trails.

As part of the Healthy Parks Plan, which is set to run from Spring 2024 through June 2025, Precinct 4 aims to create a master plan that includes the input of residents. The goal is to identify areas for improvement, prioritize investments, and ultimately develop an implementation strategy for park enhancements. This could mean adding new amenities such as splash pads or disc golf courses, improving existing playgrounds or trails, or even developing new parks closer to where people live.

The plan is focused on building healthier communities through better access to quality parks. Parks offer numerous benefits, including opportunities for outdoor recreation, improved physical and mental health, and community building. They also help boost the local economy and contribute to environmental conservation. However, funding for parks is limited, making it crucial for Precinct 4 to effectively prioritize improvements based on community feedback.

The Healthy Parks Plan includes the development of a Healthy Parks Index (HPI), which will rank parks based on four key categories:

  • Community health
  • Environmental vulnerability
  • Park access
  • Park underinvestment

To ensure the plan meets the needs of residents, Precinct 4 is asking for public input. The survey will help the planning department understand which parks are most important to residents and where improvements should be focused. The survey takes just 5 minutes to complete, and respondents have the chance to win a $50 gift card.

Residents can take the survey in English or Spanish through the links provided below:

The survey is a crucial part of the planning process, and Precinct 4 encourages all community members to participate and help shape the future of their parks. By taking the survey, residents can ensure that their favorite park gets the attention it deserves in the planning of the Healthy Parks initiative.
