Harris County Precinct 4 Hosts School Safety Townhall at Radack Community Center

April 03 2025

As school safety continues to be a top concern for families and educators across the region, Harris County Precinct 4 is inviting the public to a School Safety Townhall Meeting on Friday, April 5, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Radack Community Center, located at 18650 Clay Road in West Houston. The event is hosted in partnership with the Harris County Safe School Commission (HCSSC) and is free to attend.

This townhall offers an open forum for students, parents, educators, and community leaders to gather, share concerns, and ask questions about pressing school safety issues. Topics on the agenda include online safety, responsible firearm storage, and overall campus security, with a goal of promoting transparency, collaboration, and actionable solutions.

“We want this to be a conversation where every voice is heard—especially our students and educators,” said Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner, Lesley Briones. “This is about building safer environments together.”

To encourage youth engagement, student attendees will be eligible for service hours, and a light breakfast will be provided for all guests.

A Response to Tragedy—and a Commitment to Progress

The Harris County Safe School Commission was originally formed in June 2022, following the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers. At the time, the Harris County Commissioners Court approved the creation of the HCSSC at the recommendation of Commissioner Tom Ramsey (Precinct 3) to explore how the County could better support its 25 Independent School Districts and private schools.

In August 2024, the Commissioners Court formally expanded and strengthened the commission into a permanent body through a proposal from Commissioner Lesley Briones. The restructured HCSSC now focuses on identifying national best practices, improving communication and coordination among school leaders and law enforcement, and developing practical safety strategies that meet the needs of diverse school communities.

“We’ve learned that improving school safety isn’t just about policies—it’s about people coming together,” added Briones. “This townhall is an opportunity to do just that.”

Why It Matters for Harris County Families

With more than 25 school districts and 75+ law enforcement agencies operating across Harris County, ensuring cohesive and effective school safety measures requires ongoing dialogue and collaboration. This townhall is one of several being hosted across the county to bring stakeholders to the table and better understand local challenges—from cyberbullying to crisis response readiness.

This is an opportunity for the community to not only learn more about what’s being done to protect students—but to be part of the solution.
