Harris County Pets Launches Monthly 'Pets on Wheels' Events to Provide Affordable Veterinary Care Across Harris County
Harris County Pets (HCP), a municipal animal shelter serving the residents and pets of unincorporated Harris County, is proud to announce its planned expansion of the successful County Pets on Wheels initiative, according to a release issued by officials. The shelter, which accepts every animal that comes through its doors regardless of breed, temperament, health conditions and circumstances, receives 20-60 animals per day, averaging over 16,000 to 20,000 animals per year.
The inaugural County Pets on Wheels event occurred on Saturday, June 22 at Riley Chambers Park in Crosby, where 20 dogs were spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated for the low cost of $25. Due to the positive feedback and turnout, HCP has decided to host these events monthly, visiting different locations throughout Harris County to serve pet owners across the region. The program will continue to offer affordable spaying/neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations for pet owners in select ZIP codes.
Corey Steele, Veterinary Public Health Director for Harris County Public Health (HCPH), which operates HCP, said, "This program allows us to directly reach pet owners who may face financial barriers to spaying or neutering their furry companions. Spaying and neutering is essential for animal welfare and helps to control pet overpopulation in our community."
By investing in pet adoption, fostering, volunteering, rescues/transports, and providing basic veterinary care, HCP shows a steadfast commitment to providing a positive outcome for all pets in their facility. In 2023, their live release rate was 97.7%, demonstrating the impact their lifesaving programs and services have on the animals in their care. The County Pets on Wheels initiative is yet another example of HCP's innovative approach to connecting with pet owners and ensuring their pets receive the care they deserve.
Specific details regarding future event dates, locations, and participating ZIP codes will be announced monthly. Residents interested in participating in upcoming County Pets on Wheels events are encouraged to follow Harris County Pets on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates.
