For Spring and Klein-area residents who have been waiting for Trader Joe’s to arrive closer to home, the project is still moving forward — but the timeline has changed.

A new state construction filing for Trader Joe’s - Spring at 21364 Kuykendahl Road in Spring calls for the 12,506-square-foot grocery store’s interior buildout to begin Dec. 1, 2026, and continue through April 1, 2027. The work carries an estimated cost of $900,000 and is described as the interior buildout of a retail grocer.

That pushes a key construction milestone beyond the schedule My Neighborhood News reported when plans first surfaced in April. But a closer look at the filings, along with newly updated leasing materials for Spring Town Center, provides a clearer picture of what is happening: the earlier project and the newest filing cover different pieces of construction, while the shopping center itself is moving into another phase of expansion.

For residents, the most important takeaway is that Trader Joe’s is still planned for Spring Town Center, although shoppers may be waiting longer than the original construction schedule suggested before the store is ready for business.

What Changed With the Trader Joe’s Spring Timeline?

When My Neighborhood News first reported the Spring Trader Joe’s plans in April 2026, a state filing associated with Trader Joe’s - Spring Town Center III listed work beginning June 1, 2026, and ending Jan. 31, 2027.

That earlier project covered the construction of a 12,506-square-foot shell building and related site work, with an estimated cost of $2 million.

The newer filing is more specific to Trader Joe’s itself.

Registered under Spring Town Center Phase III, it identifies the same 12,506-square-foot footprint at 21364 Kuykendahl Road but describes the project as an interior buildout of a retail grocer. That work is scheduled from Dec. 1, 2026, through April 1, 2027.

In other words, the newest filing does not necessarily represent a simple four-month delay to the same construction project. Instead, it appears to document the next stage: taking the new retail shell and completing the interior work necessary to turn it into an operating Trader Joe’s.

What it does mean is that April 2027 has become the latest construction date Spring-area shoppers should be watching.

Trader Joe’s has not announced an official opening date, and the completion date listed on a construction filing should not be interpreted as a guaranteed grand opening date. Grocery stores can still require inspections, equipment installation, inventory, employee training and other preparations before opening to customers.

Trader Joe’s Is Part of a Larger Spring Town Center Expansion

The latest NewQuest leasing brochure offers another piece of context that was not as visible when the Trader Joe’s plans first emerged: the grocery store is being positioned as part of a broader expansion on the northeast side of Spring Town Center.

NewQuest’s current site plan identifies the 12,506-square-foot “Coming Soon: Specialty Grocer” beside an 8,400-square-foot future retail building available for pre-leasing. A conceptual rendering places those two projects next to one another and lists anticipated delivery in 2027, suggesting the area around Trader Joe’s is intended to become a new retail cluster rather than simply a stand-alone grocery addition.

That portion of the center sits near Cinemark and alongside an established lineup that includes Planet Fitness, Petco, Rockler and DDS Dentures, with restaurants and service businesses spread throughout the property.

Across FM 2920 and Kuykendahl Road, the center’s southeast section includes another substantial mix of tenants, including Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Panda Express, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Alicia’s Mexican Grille, Shogun Japanese Restaurant, CityVet, Chase and Verizon, among others. The latest site plan also identifies HTeaO as coming soon, a proposed FedEx location and several commercial pads still available for future development.

For Spring residents, that larger picture matters. Trader Joe’s is joining a retail center that is still adding businesses and building out undeveloped portions of the property — meaning the grocer could help shape the next chapter of an intersection that is already one of the area's familiar destinations for shopping, dining, errands and entertainment.

Why FM 2920 and Kuykendahl Continues to Draw New Retail

The numbers behind Spring Town Center help explain the continuing investment.

According to NewQuest’s 2026 leasing materials, Spring Town Center receives more than 9.3 million visits annually, based on Placer.ai data. Within five miles of the center, the estimated 2025 population is 234,835, with an average household income of approximately $143,458.

Closer to the development, growth has been even sharper. The population within one mile increased from 11,422 in 2020 to 13,861 in 2025, a 21.4% increase, according to Census and ESRI figures cited in the brochure. Within three miles, the population reached 85,731 in 2025.

The surrounding housing market also gives retailers a picture of a heavily residential customer base. NewQuest cites an average home price of $392,188 within five miles, along with 121 annual home closings and 61 annual home starts based on Zonda estimates from the first quarter of 2026. About 83.8% of occupied housing units within five miles are owner-occupied, according to the demographic profile.

Those figures are more than numbers on a leasing sheet. They help illustrate something residents along the Spring and Klein corridor have experienced firsthand: more rooftops, more families and, increasingly, more retailers following them.

Why Trader Joe’s in Spring Has Generated So Much Interest

Trader Joe’s has a customer following that differs from many traditional supermarket chains.

Founded in Pasadena, California, in 1967, Trader Joe’s built its brand around a relatively compact neighborhood grocery format and a heavily private-label product assortment. Instead of trying to stock every national brand and variety, the company curates a smaller assortment that includes frozen meals, snacks, pantry items, produce, baked goods and seasonal products.

That approach has helped turn certain Trader Joe’s foods into their own small cultural phenomena, with customers tracking seasonal returns and new product releases and sometimes planning shopping trips specifically around the chain.

The company also does not follow some familiar grocery-industry practices such as weekly sales, traditional loyalty programs or digital coupons. Its model instead focuses on everyday pricing and a rotating product mix.

For Spring and Klein residents who currently travel farther to shop at Trader Joe’s, the significance of the Kuykendahl Road store is fairly straightforward: a specialty grocery trip that previously required leaving the immediate area could eventually become part of an ordinary run down FM 2920.

Spring Town Center Is Becoming More Than a Collection of Big-Box Stores

Spring Town Center has long benefited from large anchors and high-traffic destinations, but its latest plans point toward a somewhat broader mix.

On the northeast side, Cinemark occupies more than 42,000 square feet, while Planet Fitness encompasses more than 25,000 square feet. Petco and the future specialty grocer each occupy roughly 12,500 square feet. Smaller restaurants, personal services and specialty retailers fill in the spaces between those larger destinations.

The planned 8,400-square-foot retail building beside the specialty grocer creates room for another group of tenants, while available restaurant and retail spaces elsewhere in the property leave additional opportunities for the center to continue changing.

That combination is important to how shopping centers evolve. A resident may arrive for groceries, stay for dinner, stop at a service business or make another purchase nearby. The more reasons people have to combine errands in one location, the more the center becomes woven into everyday neighborhood routines.

Trader Joe’s could add another strong draw to that mix.

A Growing Customer Base Around Spring Town Center

The demographic profile around Spring Town Center also points to a large family and homeowner population.

Within five miles, there were an estimated 82,992 households in 2025, while the median age was 36.9. More than eight in 10 occupied housing units were owner-occupied.

For retailers deciding where to expand, those characteristics can signal a substantial nearby customer base. For residents, they help explain why recognizable restaurants, grocers and services continue targeting this part of northwest Harris County.

The result has been a gradual shift in what living in Spring and Klein looks like. Stores that once required a drive toward The Woodlands, Cypress or central Houston are increasingly finding their way into neighborhood commercial corridors closer to where residents live.

What Does the New Trader Joe’s Timeline Mean for Spring Shoppers?

For now, the answer residents are looking for most — when will Trader Joe’s in Spring actually open? — does not yet have an official date.

The newest construction filing gives the best current clue.

Interior work is scheduled to begin Dec. 1, 2026, and conclude April 1, 2027. Because that filing deals with the grocery store buildout itself, April has become a more meaningful milestone than the January 2027 completion date associated with the earlier shell-building project.

Still, there could be additional work between construction completion and opening day.

The broader Spring Town Center plans are also worth watching. NewQuest's current rendering lists 2027 anticipated delivery for the new retail area containing the specialty grocer and neighboring 8,400-square-foot future retail space.

That means 2027 could bring more than one new storefront to this portion of the center.

What Happens Next at Trader Joe’s and Spring Town Center

Over the coming months, residents are likely to see the project become increasingly visible as building work progresses and the Trader Joe’s interior begins taking shape.

The revised schedule may require a little more patience than Spring shoppers originally expected, but the latest plans also show something bigger happening around the store.

Spring Town Center is continuing to fill in. New retail space is being prepared. Additional commercial pads remain available. Existing restaurants, entertainment venues, fitness businesses and everyday services already draw millions of visits to the property each year.

Trader Joe’s will become one more part of that larger evolution — albeit one that many residents have been waiting for with particular interest.

For now, the clearest update is this: Trader Joe’s remains planned for 21364 Kuykendahl Road in Spring, its interior buildout is now scheduled through April 2027, and the store is arriving as part of a broader phase of retail development at Spring Town Center.
