Harris County ESD 11 Hosts Free Car Seat Check to Help Protect Young Passengers
Harris County ESD 11 is inviting local families in Champions Park and beyond to a free car seat check event on Friday, November 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at 18334 Stuebner Airline Road in Spring, TX. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) will be available to help parents and caregivers ensure their child safety seats are properly installed and being used correctly.
This event is part of a broader initiative to reduce child injuries and fatalities caused by car crashes, one of the leading causes of death for children in the United States. Harris County ESD 11 CEO Jordan Anderson emphasized the importance of preventive action, citing recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children in the United States and according to the National Highway Safety Administration, 43% of children killed in car crashes in 2023 were unrestrained with an estimated 46% of all car seats misused,” said Anderson. “Those statistics are terrifying but at the same time it's estimated 300 children under 5 were saved by their car seats. As first responders all too often we unfortunately treat children in car crashes. We want to do what we can ahead of time to make sure car seats are as safe as they can be.”
To maximize community impact, Harris County ESD 11 is partnering with Safe Kids of Greater Houston, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Save a Life to ensure that as many families as possible receive support and guidance. Attendees are encouraged to book an appointment in advance to secure a spot with one of the CPSTs. Registration is available at freeseatcheck.as.me/HCESD11.
Why Car Seat Checks Matter
In a world where families are constantly on the go, proper car seat use can be a life-or-death matter. Despite good intentions, many parents unknowingly install seats incorrectly or transition children out of booster seats too early. Events like this offer peace of mind and expert guidance from trained technicians.
