Harmony and Friendship: Discovering the Joy of Singing with Katy Vocal Express
Music has a remarkable ability to unite people, creating bonds that transcend age, background, and experience. In Katy, one group is harnessing this power to not only enhance the joy of music-making but also to foster lasting friendships among its members: Katy Vocal Express. This non-profit 4-part A-Capella Barbershop-style singing group, a local chapter of the renowned Sweet Adelines International, brings together women of all walks of life who share a mutual love of singing.
Chartered in 2016, Katy Vocal Express is not just a harmonious collective of voices but also a vibrant platform for friendship, learning, and enjoyment. Falling in line with Sweet Adeline's International, comprising over 30,000 women worldwide, Katy Vocal Express is a prime example of the power of shared passions. Age is no barrier, as young and seasoned members alike immerse themselves in the enchanting world of barbershop harmony.
The uniqueness of this vocal style is in the four-part harmony, each part serving a distinctive role. The ‘Tenor’ combines melodious harmonies above the lead part. The ‘Lead’ complements this with the main melody, sung in the 2nd soprano range. The ‘Baritone,’ harmonizes with the same range as the lead, displaying remarkable versatility. The foundation is laid by the 'Bass,' a warm, mellow voice that resonates at the ensemble's foundation.

In addition to weekly rehearsals at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church on Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 pm, members of Katy Vocal Express have the opportunity to perform at numerous events and functions throughout the year, recently singing the National Anthem at a Space Cowboys game, and are lined up for events like AARP Luncheon and The Gathering Place. Additionally, they celebrate the joy of singing within the community, working with local organizations to spread happiness through their uplifting performances.
Eager to introduce more people to the magic of barbershop harmony, Katy Vocal Express has planned an enticing recruitment event: "Tunes and Treats.” Scheduled for 7:00 PM on Monday, September 9 at Holy Covenant UMC, located at 22111 Morton Ranch Rd, Katy, TX 77449, this event is an open invitation to 'timid testers' and potential new members. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the distinctive music style, enjoy delightful fellowship, and of course, indulge in some tasty treats.
