Halloween and Fall Safety Tips from the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office

October 17 2024

As ghouls and goblins eagerly anticipate their plunder of treats, families across Fort Bend County are preparing for the excitement of Halloween. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office has provided essential safety tips to help ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities safely.

Always Supervise Children

Parental supervision is crucial during fall activities, especially in busy environments like pumpkin patches and Halloween events. Young children should never go trick-or-treating alone and should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. For older children, it's important to establish a safe route and set a designated time for returning home, with regular check-ins from parents or guardians.

Inspect Candy Thoroughly

After a night of trick-or-treating, parents are advised to inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. This includes checking for any signs of tampering or unwrapped treats, ensuring that the treats are safe for consumption.

Wear Reflective Clothing and Use Sidewalks

For those venturing out after dark, especially on Halloween night, wearing reflective clothing can increase visibility to drivers. Additionally, glowsticks and flashlights are recommended for added safety. Always stick to sidewalks while walking through neighborhoods, and if driving, maintain a slow and cautious speed while avoiding mobile device use.

Make Costumes Safe and Comfortable

When selecting Halloween costumes, parents should opt for designs that are not overly long or cumbersome to prevent tripping hazards. Masks should allow for clear visibility; face paint can serve as a safer alternative. Take a photo of your child with their costume so that if they go missing, you will have a photo of what they are wearing.

Teach Children About Safety

It's vital to educate children about the importance of not entering strangers’ homes while trick-or-treating. Encourage them to stick to well-lit areas and approach only houses that visibly welcome trick-or-treaters. Remind children to look both ways and listen for traffic before crossing roadways.

Avoid Homemade Treats

While homemade treats may be tempting, the Sheriff's Office advises sticking to packaged candies from trusted sources to minimize potential risks.

Enjoy a Safe Halloween Season

The Harris County Sheriff's Office emphasizes that by following these safety tips, families can have a fun and enjoyable Halloween season. As the festivities begin, remember to prioritize safety and keep the spirit of the season alive.
