Why Participate in National Drug Take Back Day?
The drug overdose crisis in the United States remains a public health and safety concern, with prescription drug misuse playing a significant role in the epidemic. The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to reduce the risk of medication misuse and opioid addiction by encouraging safe disposal practices.
Unused medications left in homes can often be misused or stolen, leading to potentially dangerous consequences. By participating in Drug Take Back Day, residents help protect their families and the community from prescription drug abuse.

In the October 2024 National Drug Take Back Day, the DEA recorded:
-
4,425 law enforcement agencies participating
-
4,644 collection sites across the country
-
629,953 lbs. (314 tons) of medication collected
-
Over 19.2 million lbs. (9,600 tons) collected since the program began
